Brady Law Now 16 Years Old, a Public Safety Success Story
WASHINGTON --- Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement today on the sixteenth anniversary of the signing of the Brady Law:“On November 30, 1993, President Bill Clinton was joined by Jim and Sarah Brady and many others in the White House for the signing of the Brady Law which requires criminal background checks on firearms purchases from federally licensed gun dealers.
From when the law went into effect in 1994 through last December, nearly 1.8 million prohibited purchasers have been stopped in their attempts to buy firearms illegally. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has built a powerful and efficient system for running these background checks, with over 90 percent of checks being completed within minutes.
“While we celebrate this law as a major success story in our efforts to reduce gun violence, we need to do more by closing the loophole in this law that allows dangerous people to buy guns without a background check from ‘private sellers’ at places like gun shows. Ten years ago last April, two high schoolers killed 13 at Columbine High School in Colorado, armed with guns purchased from gun shows without Brady background checks.
This past summer, Colin Goddard, who was shot four times at Virginia Tech in April 2007, visited gun shows with a hidden camera and recorded transaction after transaction of purchases of firearms without a Brady background check. It’s frightening to see how easy it is to buy guns without a background check. Colin Goddard’s story can be viewed at www.BradyCampaign.org.
“We must also ensure that states supply and the FBI has access to the records needed to identify people who are prohibited from purchasing firearms, and make certain that records of sales are not hastily destroyed in a way that makes the job of law enforcement tougher.
“Sixteen years after opponents of sensible gun laws argued that the Brady Law would be ineffective because criminals supposedly wouldn’t buy guns from licensed dealers, we see almost two million blocked sales. We need to extend that success in blocking dangerous people from getting guns by requiring Brady checks on all gun sales and ensuring the appropriate records are in place.”

Epic Fail
The weapons purchased at the Tanner Gun Show in Denver and later used at Columbine High School were not sold to either of the two killers, but to Robyn Anderson, a fellow student who was 18 at the time. Had she brought them from an FFL, she would have passed the Brady background check and been prosecuted for making a straw purchase. It is a lie to say that any background check would have prevented Harris and Klebold from acquiring the guns .
Why you're even bringing up Virginia Tech and Seung-Hui Cho is beyond me, as he passed a Brady background check when he purchased his gun.
I repeat: Cho went to a FFL dealer, his application was submitted to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, and it came back clean. Your precious background check that was going to save so many lives did nothing to stop this guy.
Both of these are examples of how your plan failed. Cho went through the check and it didn't stop him. Harris and Klebold used straw purchases that would not have been stopped either. The count is 0-2 for the Brady plan.

When You're the Brady Campaign
You have a low bar to meet when considering how successful you are. Just remove any guns from US citizens and you've made progress no matter how many criminals continue to abuse and circumvent the system.

Brady Law? Brady Lies!
Paul Helmke's article reads like a lame joke. Of all the leftist organizations in America held in the greatest contempt as rabid liars, the Brady Campaign to Stop Handgun Violence is certainly it. Virtually …anybody… can dispute them with a minimum of facts. Certainly, the U.S. Justice Department's own National Institute of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics does a good enough job of that. According to both government and independent studies published through the NIJ, criminals do not generally purchase guns at gun shows , or gun stores for that matter. They steal them, often from each other, or purchase them illegally. When they are purchased legally, it is not the Brady Law that stops them. Helmke forgot to mention that most of the transfer denials are due to administrative errors in the system against legal purchasers and the purchases are made when the errors are cleared up. If anything, the check system is a hindrance to "legal" purchasers. The exceptions are those instant checks that were already implemented by individual states that refused to submit to the previously proposed waiting periods. As far as any reduction in violent crime , we can attribute that to the sweeping adoption of concealed carry laws in some 45+ states across America, not the Brady Bunch.

Exactly "who" was denied...
Quote: "we see almost two million blocked sales".
I am sure that all the denied felons were deterred from committing any criminal activity from that day on; and I know pigs really do fly.
As a related article (How Can You Lose Your Right To Own A Gun) states, many misdemeanor infractions fall under the Brady Ban, as do many non-violent low grade felonies; i.e. Martha Stewart. I wonder how many of the 2 million people denied didn't even realize that they had lost that Constitutional right until effecting a purchase, but are categorized at the same level as a maniacal killer intent on maximum destruction. It just doesn't seem to be an equitable solution for controlling or preventing criminal activity.

It Is My Understanding...
...that the Brady Campaign believes ownership of a gun leads to criminal activity. Though there is no study to support this it is apparent that this is a firm belief of theirs.

How far from the truth can you get?
So you block gun sales , therefore you've stopped that many crimes???
This should be considered the 16th anniversary of another sick boost to a police state.
Even some who don't reject gun control altogether admit this bill did next to nothing:

This seems like a good source of info if you can find the original article:
