Brady Campaign - Stronger Gun Laws Could Have Saved McNair
Washington, D.C. - Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun
Violence, issued the following statement on developments in the investigation
into the homicide of former NFL quarterback Steve McNair:
“Steve McNair’s
extraordinary talents helped him avoid defensive linemen for 13 seasons in the
NFL but, like far too many Americans, he fell victim to our weak gun laws. The
woman who shot and killed Steve McNair purchased her handgun from a private
seller who was exempt from Brady Law background checks. Because she was not yet
21 years of age, she was a prohibited handgun buyer and would have failed a
Brady check. In addition, a mandatory federal waiting period for handgun sales
may well have prevented this tragedy, since the shooting occurred only two days
after she bought the gun. A waiting period and background check may have saved
Steve McNair’s life.”

And another thing, why does the Brady Bunch insist that I have my rights limited for a crime I haven't yet committed? If you look at this statistically, way less than 1% of permit holders ever get convicted of violent crimes. By comparison, the general public, depending on your state, has a conviction rate of between 5 and 10% or higher.
If I were to use the brand of...ahem....logic...cough....that the Brady Bunch uses, we should actually lock up everyone in the U.S. that does NOT have a carry permit. That way I wouldn't need my guns . Can we start with Sarah Brady and Paul Helmke?
I am tiring of Paul Helmke. Whenever I read something he says, I first have to put on the hip waders.
Essentially what he is saying here is, "If only we had more laws, they wouldn't be broken." Yea, that's worked so well in the past.
"If only we had more laws, they wouldn't be broken."
Haha, very well put, and very true.
FIDELITY.
That relatively short word with huge implications could not only have saved him, but his family from the grief they now suffer.
As a wife, it would be hard for me to decide whether to mourn him or spit on him. I feel for this family.
No one deserves to die like that, so don't misunderstand my bluntness.
A whole lot of things could have saved him, of which stricter gun laws are the least.
I have to disagree with this opinion, someone who is intent on killing will find a way. And women who kill (other adults) generally use poison; so much easier than purchasing a gun.
