Brady Campaign Says Passage of Ensign Amendment Dangerous

| by Brady Campaign

Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent
Gun Violence, issued the following statement:

“Today, a majority of United States Senators voted to
take away the right of District of Columbia residents to enact necessary,
common sense gun laws to protect their community, even while they approved
District voting representation in Congress.

“If the Ensign Amendment to the D.C. Voting Rights bill
becomes law, it will undermine public safety and make our Nation’s Capital less
safe.

“Instead of allowing the gun lobby to weaken gun laws in
our Nation’s Capital, Congress should be strengthening our woefully inadequate
Federal gun laws by requiring Brady background checks for all gun sales,
including at gun shows; closing the gap that gives known or suspected
terrorists an opening to buy guns; and giving law enforcement more tools to
fight illegal gun trafficking.”
