Blagojevich Removed from Office Despite Speech

SPRINGFIELD, Ill --- Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was ousted from his office on Thursday when the State Senate voted 59-0 in favor of his dismissal.

For a while it looked as if the embattled Blagojevich would completely boycott his impeachment trial in favor of a nationwide media tour, but he returned to his home state to deliver an impassioned, last-minute defense in front of the Illinois Senate. In a wide-ranging speech, Blagojevich continued to paint himself as a victim on special interests groups and bipartisan politics and acknowledged that while he may have sometimes been too aggressive, he insisted never broke the law.

"Always those ways were lawful. Always those ways were done in consultation with lawyers, and with all due respect to the prosecutor Mr. Ellis, always the means were legal and in most cases the ends were moral," he said.
