Blacks, Women Biggest Cell Phone Users

| by Mark Berman Opposing Views

Blacks talk twice as much as whites on their cell phones, and women talk and text more than men, according to a new study.

The Nielsen Company analyzed the phone bills of 60,000 people for one year. It concluded that blacks talk an average of 1,331 minutes per month, compared with 647 minutes per month for whites.

Hispanics talked 826 minutes per month, and Asians and Pacific Islanders 692 minutes per month.

One possible reason for the difference in cell phone usage is that fewer blacks have home phones than whites. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 25% of black adults only have a cell phone, compared with 21% for white adults.

Blacks and Hispanics are big texters, too. Blacks send and receive 780 messages per month, Hispanics 767. Compare that to 566 for whites and 384 for Asians and Pacific Islanders.

As far as the difference between men and women, the ladies talk 22% more than men -- 856 minutes per month compared with 667. They also text 34% more.
