Atheist Kids’ Film "The Golden Compass" Will Not Get a Sequel
Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on reports that there will be no sequel to “The Golden Compass,” the movie based on the first book of a trilogy by English author Philip Pullman:
Two years ago, the Catholic League launched a boycott of “The Golden Compass” in the hope that Christian parents would keep their children away from the film and thus not be inclined to buy them His Dark Materials, the trilogy of pro-atheist books aimed at young people.
We also wanted to discourage the possibility that producers would make a movie of “The Subtle Knife,” the second book of the trilogy. We knew we succeeded in the first goal, and had every reason to believe we were going to win on the second one. Now Pullman has confirmed our victory: there will be no sequel.
Pullman has been widely quoted in Britain taking aim at me for my alleged “triumphalism.” The accusation is accurate. I am positively gloating. Cheers, everyone!

They're getting desperate.
Really, the movie itself was pretty poorly done. It felt like the director was rushing the audience through it and nothing was well developed. It's far more likely that the series was terminated because it was awful, rather than being the result of any sort of "victory" on the part of the religious parties opposed to the material.
This j--- is at it again!
This is what kids grow up to be when they aren't taught to think and question.
Wow, science fiction/fantasy writings involving a storyline against mind-control and social dictatorship are so threatening to religion (s). Surprised I am not.
If Mr. Donohue thinks theism is so fragile that it must be protected by denying children access to harmless (and wonderful) entertainment like this then his arguments for the existence of his Catholic god must be on very shaky foundations indeed...
Will his 2,000 year old beliefs not withstand the showing of a children's movie?
I always feel that arguments should be won on merit in open debate, not by trying to deny the other side a voice.
IT IS A MOVIE, NOT A CULT. FICTIONNNNNN.
this incident reveals what the Catholic League is really for. The elimination of all alternative ideas in the public square.
I know Catholics want to corner the market on indoctrination of children from a young age, but it's sad if they feel their position is so weak, so unfounded, so unjustifiable that they would fear their children being exposed to a single contradictory idea in a film where the atheist message wouldn't even be noticed by the most astute child.
Clearly the goal of the Catholic League is to revert mankind to the Dark Ages.
Congratulations.
"Heaven" forbid we allow children to grow up being able to think for themselves on such matters. That could be potentially ruinous for religious indoctrination.
