Atheist Group Questions Study Linking Atheists to Higher Intelligence

A study claiming that liberals and Atheists are "more intelligent" than religious believers is causing a buzz in the news media and academic circles.

Authored by Satoshi Kanazawa of the London School of Economics, the study claims that "more intelligent individuals may be more likely to acquire and espouse evolutionarily novel values and preferences (such as liberalism and atheism...) than less intelligent individuals."

Fellow academics are saying that Kanazawa's research and conclusions are flawed.

And now, some Atheists agree and are speaking out.

Dr. Ed Buckner, President of American Atheists, said that "intelligence" -- especially as reflected by so-called IQ tests -- can be difficult to define and quantify. "There are often cultural, ethnic, and even sexual biases at work here, and a good case can be made that there are actually many different kinds of intelligence," said Buckner. "Something like 'intelligence' has to be understood in a very broad context, and Dr. Kanazawa seems not to have given that sufficient consideration."

"We have never said that Atheists or other non-believers are inherently 'superior' or 'smarter' than religious people, even though we do assert that logic and evidence are on our side regarding our conclusions.

Questions about religious beliefs and whether 'god' exists should be discussed and argued based on the best evidence."

Buckner also noted that members of American Atheists vary considerably regarding political philosophies, saying that "liberals, libertarians, conservatives, and other (less orthodox) categories can all be found

among our members and leaders." He added that a Catholic or Muslim with an IQ score higher than a random non-believer, for instance, does not constitute any special evidence regarding claims any of them might make.

"And we're totally against Atheists suddenly telling the world, 'Hey, look at us, we're right because we're bright!' "

Kathleen Johnson, Vice President for American Atheists, said that she prefers to suggest that all or at least most Americans can, with sufficient reasoning, understand the need to question religion.

"There are all kinds of Atheists, just as there are all kinds of believers," said Johnson. "We advocate a polite, courteous, and 'spirited' exchange of views, and we encourage everyone -- Atheist and religious alike -- to exercise their First Amendment rights by expressing their opinions in a constitutional manner in the public square. We can win in the marketplace of ideas without invidious comparisons or pointless insults aimed at those with whom we differ."

The examples in the original article show that reasonable discourse on the subject completely without insults or 3rd grade silliness is possible.

But, that lofty ideal is not adhered to in the comments that follow.

How important should what you believe be to me? Whatever that amount is in your view, cut it by 99.9% and we'll then agree.

I am an atheist but I would take this study with a grain of salt.

I read about this study a while back, and the statistical difference between the groups was barely statistically significant, so it could have been white noise or some problem in the methodology.

I't seems strange that every time the abortion argument comes up,people start yapping about a womans right; Did she not choose to have unprotected SEX did she not choose to SPRED her legs did she not make that choice or did somene else make that choice for her. As for religion if you want to beleive we EVOLVED from monkeys, what happened to the rest of the monkeys did they choose to stay monkeys, or is it intelagent design meaning there is a higher power. If you want to impose your'e morals 'OR' lack there of, on the rest of socity become a politician and get elected to our "CORRUPT" government and then ram it down our necks like the current administration is doing. But thats another story for another day.
HAVE A GOOD ONE

I really wish that people would actually try to understand what they are criticizing before they criticize it.

No where in evolutionary theory does it ever say we evolved from monkeys, and furthermore it is entirely for one group of a species to evolve into something else while another group stays the same or evolves into something else.

As an atheist I am not interested in ramming my ethical beliefs down anyone throats through the use of political force, I only wish to make sure that no one else, including Christians, get that ability either.

I think the way to get others on board with an idea is to support the idea with evidence and reasoned arguments, not use laws to force everyone to agree to it.

The Bible says in the book of Psalms, "A fool says in his heart there is no God."
The Bible also says that the unbelievers will burn in hell. It is love for your neighbor to warn them of impending doom. It is smart to read the Bible, your eternal life is a terrible thing to waste.

There is nothing as unbecoming and ultimately dangerous as a missionary from any religion whatsoever.

You cannot accept somebody from another religion or belief system if you are thinking they will burn in hell. Conversely, I cannot think of you as a valid counterpart for any conversations if I cannot see but an arrogant ignorant, incapable of considering others' point of view.

I am neither arrogant or ignorant or incapable of considering other's views. I am not unbecoming, dangerous or a religious missionary. I am not the authority of your life any more than you are of mine. But God is the authority and author of life and I only repeated what he said in the Holy Bible. Can you not debate without name callling, I know why you do that, it is because you have no higher authority to quote or verify your beliefs.

In the Old Times, when the whole village believed in one Holy Text, your view was quite acceptable. But now we live in a multi-cultural world where you have to, at least, believe that somehow the members of other cultures can also reach what they consider Heaven, or the ultimate prize for a good life.

Sorry to say so, but you are arrogant when you "only repeated what he said in the Holy Bible". And you are saying that God is the authority of life, implying your God, not any other. Am I wrong ?

Just tell me, are you saying I will burn in Hell because I am an Atheist? Are Buddha and Plato and Aristotle in Hell?

(By the way, please change your username. Science is not about Truth. Maybe scientificevidence, or mytruth?)

How many gods do you think there are? I never once gave my opinion, I only stated what the Bible said. I certainly dont know who is in hell and who isn't, only God himself knows that. Athiests can come to faith on their death bed and believers can fall from faith so no one knows who goes where. What kind of an example are you setting for other people who discriminate by name calling and bullying people that disagree with you, because that is pretty much what discrimination entails.
