ACLU Sues to Remove War Memorial Cross

The ACLU is suing to remove a war memorial in the Mojave Desert that prominently features a cross, arguing that the memorial, which is on public land, amounts to an unconstitutional endorsement of religion by the government. The case is currently winding its way through the legal system and is expected to reach the Supreme Court this fall.

In this video from Fox News, Megyn Kelly interviews Henry Sandoz and his wife, the couple who has been caring from the memorial for decades.

OpposingViews asks: Should the war memorial be taken down?

Every single dot of land in USA is " government land" seeing as how we NEVER own our land, we are always paying taxes and the right of eminent domain shows your land is really nothing. On that note does it mean if I am offended by some mans moustache, or a womans hair color, or the outfit someone from another country wears...can I sue them as they are walking on the city streets?? How about if they are in a National Park or Touring the White House?
When will America tell the ACLU ENOUGH!
Go to some other country and push your agenda We are supposed to be the UNITED STATES..not too united if every thing can be struck down, boarded over or taken away because ONE person was offended.
What the TRUTH is...ACLU stands for
Anti-Christian Liberties Union.
The ACLU OFFENDS me. where do I go to sue them???

How disrespectful is this to those American soldiers who died Jewish or Agnostic or Atheist? Granted, in WWI there wouldn't have been many Hindus or Muslims in the armed services, but you certainly had Jews and Atheists / Agnostics. How disrespectful is this to them? They died for the country, and you spit on their face in death by saying "oh, your religion is cute - but Christianity is America's religion."

The hubris and disrespect to those fallen non- Christians soldiers is what is most astounding about this.

Legally, I'm not sure. It's an iffy one for me, it could potentially meet the Lemon test, although you might run into trouble on the "primary effect of advancing or inhibiting religion" since it clearly advances Christianity. I'd need more facts on the situation, frankly.

To be honest, while I don't think a cross or any religious symbol should be promoted by the government; but this cross was erected in 1934. It's been so many years; it's a virtually unheard of memorial; and it likely doesn't promote religion to excessively given when it was erected in historical context. While I support removing any religious symbols from government, there are plenty more the ACLU could concentrate on that are being shoved in our face that were put up in the last 8 years. Go tackle those before tackling things from the 1930s. Stop the current government (and previous christian fundamentalist government) from eroding our liberties right now rather than concentrating on stupidity of the past.

A) My guess is that this will ultimately be dismissed under the legal category of GIVE ME A BREAK.

II) This memorial shouldn't be taken down.

3) Angel mama, that was good but ridiculous. You seem to have watched too many South Park episodes, and appear too fixated on NAMBLA.

The Official ACLU to do list according to angel mama.
1. Sue War heros for placing a cross to commenorate their brave and heroic fight to keep American children and families safe at night. Check
2. Represent a NAMBLA member who raped and killed a boy by pushing a gasoline soaked rag into his mouth and forcing him to look at homosexual photos of men raping little boys and then brutal rape him and let all the perverts out their know that they can get away with such heinous crimes simply by using NAMBLA as their constitutional right and ALCU as their organized crime contact! Check
3. Attempt to sue the Boys Scouts...why not..nothing else better to do today. Mama and her grandmother have already been helped to cross the street corner by a scout trying to earn his eagle award and its too late to sue them for doing a good deed so lets sue them for not letting in NAMBLA pedophile rapists to lead the boys in their camping trips..a double chance to sue..sue the Boy Scouts for keeping them out and then when they slip in secret like sue them again because it was the perverts right to rape them.

The list should read like this:
1. ACLU hires NAMBLA to babysit for them while they are out sueing boy scouts...hey if the perv are going to rape any kids I say go for the ACLU'S children! They dont seem to mind!
2. ACLU sent to Afghanistan front lines.. they are told they can sue for infractions of the government thing they dont know but its a set up...good bye ALCU!
3. ACLU secured by Democratic health care reform builders to put their health care system...BIN LADEN was busy that day!
