46% of Mississippi Republicans: Outlaw Interracial Marriage

| by Mark Berman Opposing Views

A shocking and frankly disturbing study out of Mississippi shows that nearly half of Republicans in that state think interracial marriage should be illegal.

According to a report from ABC 24 in Memphis, 46% of GOP voters said interracial marriage should be banned. 14% were undecided. The poll by Public Policy Polling was taken in late March... of 2011, not 1958.

That means just 40% think it should remain legal.

Here's one apparently typical Mississippi resident. "I don't think it was ever meant to be by the Bible," said Don Murphree. "I think there's more people that think it shouldn't be done, if you get out and ask the general public." Murphree is a Democrat, by the way.

Rather than being insulted, interracial couple Elizabeth and Zach Wiggs see this as a teaching moment.

"I don't see it as an attack, I see it as an opportunity to explain to someone and give them an understanding," Zach said. "We've come so far, but you have to understand there was history there, there was a struggle in the South and that's the way things were 70 years ago, and it's going to take time for those things to work themselves out."

His wife added, "As long as people continue to raise kids to do what their hearts tell them and not let what everybody else thinks be an issue then eventually it has to correct itself."

Interracial marriage became legal in Mississippi in 1967.
