A 12-year-old Australian boy accused of raping a 6-year-old girl had his bail adjusted so he could go on a family vacation. The minor is one of two 12-year-old boys charged with sexually assaulting the young girl in a bathroom at their grade school in Sydney, Australia.
James Viney, the suspect’s defense attorney, applied to adjust bail conditions so that the boy can stay with his parents at their home in northern Sydney in order to attend a one-week family vacation.
Judge Louise McManus granted the request, voicing concern about the effect the media presence could have on a boy’s “delicate age” and tried to make the legal process as informal as possible for the children. The boy was also excused from attending his next court date.
The victim was assaulted between June 24 and Aug. 16 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The suspect allegedly raped the 6-year-old on two separate occasions and is also accused of sexually assaulting her three more times with the other 12-year-old boy, reports The Independent.
Police were notified of the incident by the victim’s parents after it took place. The 12-year-olds were arrested by authorities on Aug. 30 and suspended from school.
The boy entered a not guilty plea following the charges, which include three counts of aggravated indecency in company, two counts of sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 10, and one count of indecent assault.
"Parents and carers of students at the school are in the process of being notified, and police request the community respect the privacy of the young people involved," police said in a statement after the two boys were arrested.
