Was the World Created in Six Days?

According to Genesis, God created the universe in six days and rested on the seventh. Many religious followers believe literally that everything from the air we breathe to the water we drink was created in a matter of days. Others scoff at this interpretation, insisting that the universe couldn’t have possibly been created in such a short time span. What really happened “in the beginning”?

The Reference to 2 Peter Builds the Argument Against 6 Literal Days

Regarding Answers in Genesis (AiG) seeks to present 2 Peter as "cancelling out" the argument defending that the six days account was meant to be read as a figurative/symbollic account, I believe that a careful read of the scripture from 2 Peter only further supports a figurative reading of the Story of Genesis. For example, AiG points out that 2 Peter is often cited as stating “one day is with the Lord as a thousand years," which they believe is 'cancelled out' by “and a thousand years as one day.” Now consider these two verses; in essence when viewed together, these verse profess that God is Lord who does not act within the confines of "time," and nor is He limited by such "time." Perhaps Answers in Genesis provides us with the greatest argument in favor of understanding the Story of Creation as being a symbollic telling of the world's beginning.

In essence, from this passage from 2 Peter, we learn of a Lord who is limited by the borders of time, but rather it is God who brought time into being. It is also within this passage that we learn that the Lord would never be limited or confined to 'six days.' Perhaps the greatest argument in favor of a symbollic reading of Genesis is that creation never ceases -- Lord is never thwarted by time -- in other words, Lord continues to serve as the intelligent designer even throughout our modern age.
