Should Boys be Circumcised?

Parents face so many difficult decisions when it comes to having a child: decisions about nursing, sleep patterns, discipline, teaching methods and, in the case of boys, whether or not to circumcise. In addition to being the most common surgery for males in the U.S., circumcision has been practiced in various cultures for centuries. Yet when it comes to the health and best interest of your newborn, is circumcision the way to go?

Studies Show No Difference in Sexual Function

Edgar J. Schoen, MD

Clinical Professor of Pediatrics

This was covered in my section on Sexual Activity. As with many other of the arguments of  NOCIRC the sexual function claim, based on anecdotes, testimonials and myths, dates back decades with no attention to recent published research. Again there is a time warp. Within the past decade there have been a number of controlled studies of men circumcised as adults, and they all show no significant different in sexual function before and after circumcision. If there is a slight difference it favors circumcision – sex is slightly longer and definitely cleaner.
