Should Boys be Circumcised?

Parents face so many difficult decisions when it comes to having a child: decisions about nursing, sleep patterns, discipline, teaching methods and, in the case of boys, whether or not to circumcise. In addition to being the most common surgery for males in the U.S., circumcision has been practiced in various cultures for centuries. Yet when it comes to the health and best interest of your newborn, is circumcision the way to go?

Newborn Circumcision is Quick, Safe and Virtually Painless

Edgar J. Schoen, MD

Clinical Professor of Pediatrics

I don’t know what NOCIRC considers to be minor surgery, but to me circumcision is a prime example of this classification. Newborn circumcision is quick, safe and virtually painless. In the hands of an experienced operator it takes anywhere from 2-10 minutes and doesn’t delay the baby’s discharge from the hospital. It is an out-patient procedure at older ages and takes a few minutes longer, but he patient does not require hospitalization. From the surgical standpoint circumcision is in the same class as other minor surgical procedures such as the removal of moles or skin cysts, and takes about as long.
