Does Acupuncture Work?

Does Acupuncture Work?

Do you suffer from chronic pain? Maybe acupuncture is just what the doctor ordered. Millions of people say that acupuncture has alleviated their suffering and boosted their bodies, but others insist that it's more rooted in belief than scientific fact. Is acupuncture really the cure for what ails you, or does it only turn you into a human pincushion?

Lame and False Argument From Authority

Steven Novella, MD

New England Skeptical Society

That some physicians are using acupuncture says absolutely nothing about the evidence for it. This is a lame attempt at an argument from authority.

Further, the vast majority of doctors do no use acupuncture. In a recent survey only 6% of patients had ever received acupuncture. It remains on the fringe.

But all this is irrelevant - treatments come and go in medical practice. Many physicians try treatments that are not evidence-based, and there are sub-cultures of physicians dedicated to clearly pseudoscientific treatments, like chelation therapy for heart disease.

Your swipe against rational pharmacotherapy also betrays your bias - you easily dismiss pharmacology as "useless" and "health-threatening." This does not reflect a science-based attitude, but an ideology.

Let's stick to the evidence.
