Was the World Created in Six Days?

According to Genesis, God created the universe in six days and rested on the seventh. Many religious followers believe literally that everything from the air we breathe to the water we drink was created in a matter of days. Others scoff at this interpretation, insisting that the universe couldn’t have possibly been created in such a short time span. What really happened “in the beginning”?

Genesis Does Not Place Emphasis on the "Significance" of 6 Days

Joseph Amodeo

Contrary to what Answers in Genesis claims regarding the relationship between Genesis 1 and Genesis 2, it is important to point out a few flaws in the theory which they present.

  • Genesis 1 presents the Story of Creation over a period of seven days. Genesis 2 on the other hand does not recognize the significance in the "six days" in question. Instead, the narrative of Genesis 2 presents creation as a singular action. What Genesis 2 does say is "at the time when..." This further solidifies the point that Genesis 1's reference to six days is meant to serve as a figurative/symbolic method of telling how and why the world came to be.

  • I do agree with Answers in Genesis that yes, chapters 1 and 2 of Genesis are "complementary" accounts; however, not in the sense that they both purport a world created in six literal days, but rather a biblical theology that helps us to better understand ourselves, the world around us and the Lord who has loved humanity and His creation throughout eternity.
