Should the U.S. Allow Offshore Oil Drilling?

Should the U.S. Allow Offshore Oil Drilling?

Our lives revolve around oil. Oil brings food to our stores, comprises the fibers in our carpets and makes the plastic in our DVDs. With demand so high it’s no wonder attention has turned to supply, with some advocating the U.S. lift the ban against drilling for oil off its coasts. Is offshore oil drilling a golden opportunity, or would it only create a tidal wave of disaster?

Energy Solutions that Benefit All Americans - Something We Agree On

Kenneth B. Medlock III

Fellow in Energy Studies

To begin, the oil industry has not set energy policy.  The real problem lies in the fact that we have had no coherent energy policy.  We have sets of rules and regulations that are generally appropriate, but there is no real direction for America's Energy Future.

I agree that using less oil is a desirable outcome.  In fact, because oil is a depletable resource, this will come to pass anyway.  What I have proposed in my arguments "for" would facilitate a transition to a world where alternatives are more prevalent without tremendous economic upheaval and burdensome costs.  We need a coherent policy with a realistic and achievable goal.  This will benefit all Americans.  Such a policy should incorporate domestic resource development as an investment vehicle for a sustainable energy future.
