Is Homosexuality a Sin?

Is Homosexuality a Sin?

There has been no shortage of controversy as gay people assume increased roles as parents and married couples in our society, but almost nowhere has this conflict been more intense than in the church. Many religious leaders have condemned homosexuality, calling it a sin or even an abomination, but for millions of gay people around the world, there is nothing inherently sinful about their sexual preferences.

Clarity in Scripture

Exodus International

The statement has been made “One wonders how self-sacrificing love between committed, faithful, same sex partners could ever be described as unrighteous.” Would it sound the same if the statement was “One wonders how self-sacrificing love between committed, faithful, opposite sex partners each married to other people could ever be described as unrighteous?” The repetitive statements that refer to homosexuality being a sin when it is associated with cultic practice are false. (One would have to be a master historian and archaeologist before scripture could be correctly understood.) There is too much obscurity and reaching in these arguments. Scripture was written in a way that its teachings are able to be understood by ordinary believers. Clarity is a characteristic of Scripture. Psalm 119:130 says “The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.” For thousands of years the church has been clear that homosexuality is a sin. It is only in recent decades that we have believed ourselves to be “enlightened” and dismissed the biblical teachings of church fathers before us.

If homosexuality is a sin only when it is associated with cultic practice, then the same must apply to adultery. Adultery was commonly practiced in cultic prostitution and ritual. There are 24 sins listed in the Romans 1. Are we to apply the idolatry interpretation to all 24 sins listed? If we practice these vices in a loving, committed, faithful and self-sacrificing way, will they then be permissible? Of course not! These sins are born out of a fallen state. If homosexuality is justifiable as long as its not the result of idol worship, then the same must apply to the other 23 practices.

False Analogies Lead To False Conclusions

An unidentified person from Exodus wrote:

"If homosexuality is a sin only when it is associated with cultic practice, then the same must apply to adultery."

This is the false analogy argument.

Anti-gay folks set us a false analogy and then conclude, based on their false analogy, that homosexuality is wrong.

It works like this.

1. Assume that Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 are talking about every kind of homosexuality, including lesbianism.

2. Ignore the fact that Jewish rabbis since the Law was given 3400 years ago, have taught that lesbians are NOT included in the prohibitions of Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13.

3. Present the modern false teaching that lesbians are included in the Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 prohibitions as if it is historically true when you know its not historically true.

4. Insist that Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 are NOT about shrine prostitution or cult prostitution even though that is the context of both passages.

5. When arguing with some homosexuals, concede that the context of Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 IS shrine prostitution but then insist that the verses also refer to committed, faithful, non-cultic same sex partnerships.

6. When gay Christians point out the logical inconsistency and historical falsity of your arguments, change tactics and insist that homosexuality is like adultery (or beastiality) and since those things are bad, homosexuality must also be bad.

Here are 9 reasons why your analogy is wrong, whether analogizing to adultery or beastiality.
