Was the World Created in Six Days?

According to Genesis, God created the universe in six days and rested on the seventh. Many religious followers believe literally that everything from the air we breathe to the water we drink was created in a matter of days. Others scoff at this interpretation, insisting that the universe couldn’t have possibly been created in such a short time span. What really happened “in the beginning”?

Answers in Genesis Promotes Ignorance

Dr. Gary Hurd

Archaeologist/Researcher

Normal 0 AiG is obviously not interested in direct discussion on a neutral venue. Their presentation has merely been a regurgitation of the same arguments creationists have cashed in on for 40 years. They have disregarded all the informed refutations of their positions.

Mankind is fallible. Otherwise, the silliness sold by AiG to the vulnerable public would have been long ago discarded. True, we retain primitive superstitions and behaviors avidly exploited by the likes of AiG, but change does involve risk, and so a conservative approach is not in opposition to evolutionary theory. The YEC (Young Earth Creationist) industry makes millions of dollars a year in donations from their willing followers. Unfortunately, evolution does not regard the survival of a species as particularly important, and circumstances have reached the situation that the ignorance promoted by AiG actually does threaten continued human existence. The age of the earth is not an issue of Christian salvation, but the rejection of science does threaten our potential survival.

The age of the earth is not “proven” in philosophy because philosophy denies that anything can be “proven” other than mathematical arguments. By this same principle, if people jump off a cliff the fact that they will all die will never be “proven.” No matter how many people die, it can never be “proven” that someone might not survive.

The only assumption made by science is that the universe cannot radically change without some physical signal. We have actually seen that there is no such indication of a radical change in the universe for the last 13.7 billion years. The acceleration of the expansion of the universe is a surprise to theory, but a confirmation that the physical record of the universe is consistent and constant. Based on this obviously true assumption- the universe is consistent and not a fraud- the age of the universe and the earth are known with considerable accuracy. (I have already addressed the fact that the Bible asserts that the universe is a reliable testament to God’s creation in “But What Does the Bible Say? http://www.opposingviews.com/counters/but-what-does-the-bible-say )

This is denied by Answers in Genesis Ministries, Inc.

Instead they demand that the earth is a mere thousands of years old based on their increasingly absurd biblical interpretations. To accept this AiG dogma we will be forced to deny physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, biology and anthropology. We would also be forced to deny Scripture that teaches that the earth is a reliable and honest testament to the creation. The only forced interpretation is by AiG which bends language to manipulate the communication of the biblical message.
