By Alice Bruckenstein | Dissident Voice The impulse was always there. Why hadn’t I noticed sooner? Years ago, at a New England whaling museum, hadn’t I been horrified at battle-worn harpoons spiraled into children’s scribbles? Wasn’t I sorry for the lobsters queued up at a Bar Harbor lobster pound, even as I anticipated eating one? Didn’t I consider my annual excursions to the Dutchess County Fair the most fun anybody could have? One year, an especially friendly milk cow licked me so ... Read the Full Article

The impulse was there and finally I acted on it, too.

Good for you: you had the courage to stand up and act on your convictions despite their unpopularity. I do think it's important to focus one's efforts, as you have. I'm so glad you haven't given up! I'm sure you have helped a lot to move society towards the crest of the wave of change. Thank you!!

"The impulse was always there." That's true for me, too. I'd been a lacto-ovo-vegetarian for many years, thinking I was causing 'minimal' harm to animals. In retrospect, I think I assumed veganism was inconvenient, unappetizing and would alienate others and that's why I wasn't open to learning about milk and egg production. When I finally stumbled upon the information, I was so appalled, I became vegan right then. I think there are many for whom the impulse is there but they aren't open to the information. By showing people that a vegan diet can be very health-giving, easy and delicious, I'll help them to be more open to learning about animal ag. Then their natural inclination will inspire them to go veg. That's my hope.

Now I think we should all be vegan even if it were difficult, but that's the subject of another conversation.
