A New Mexico teenager is recovering in the hospital after she was reportedly shot in the head with a Taser dart by a local police chief. According to the Portales News-Tribune, the 14-year-old girl was hit in the head by one of two darts fired simultaneously as she fled police. The second dart shot her in the hip.

The girl's mother, Stacy Akin, told authorities that the conflict began after she and her daughter had an argument. Akin drove to the police station and the 14-year-old girl ran off, only to be found shortly after by Tucucmari Police Chief Roger Hatcher.

Hatcher allegedly fired the taser darts as the girl continued to run. “There’s a lot of issues,” he said to the News-Tribune. “She committed a delinquent act. She was running from police across traffic without looking.”

“There was a lawful reason to do that,” he went on to say. “I didn’t have another choice and had to get her stopped.” Hatcher said he chased her, ordered her to stop and “then did what I had to do.”

But the girl's parents are demanding that the police department review its policies for using the Taser. Akin told the News-Tribune that tasers should never be used on children. In additoin, the young girl is also said to have epilepsy, which she treats with medication.

She is currently in recovery after undergoing surgery at the University of New Mexico hospital in Albuquerque.

“She seems OK, but she’s in a lot of pain," Akin said. "Her head is hurting her real bad.”

    I am sorry.

I don't understand the problem. The mother must have thought this argument with her daughter was severe if she went to the police station. Then her daughter runs off and the police request her to stop. She continues to run and they use a non-lethal means of stopping her which caused her some pain. It is unfortunate that she was hit in the head by one of the darts but if she would have not run, then this would not have happened.
