Sexual Abuse by Rabbis - Where is the Public Outcry?

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on a front-page news story in today’s New York Times on the problem of child sexual abuse:

Reporter Paul Vitello shows the shocking extent of child sexual abuse in Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish community. He also details the cover-ups that have long been aided and abetted by law enforcement.

Where have all the church-and-state advocates been all these years when Orthodox rabbis were allowed by the D.A.’s office to settle these cases “internally”? Where have all the professional victims’ groups been in staging protests outside synagogues? Where have all the sue-happy lawyers been seeking to plunder the Orthodox? Where have all the comedians and late-night entertainers been in cracking jokes about rabbis raping kids?

It’s not just Orthodox Jews who have been given a pass: no group has gotten away easier than public school employees. Consider this. Because public school students have only 90 days to file suit, it is already too late to prosecute a teacher—in virtually every state—who molested a minor as recently as last spring. But if the offense took place in a Catholic school, the student has years to file suit. Not only that, molesting teachers are still shuffled from one school district to another; it’s called “passing the trash.”

Orthodox Jews try cases of child rape in rabbinical courts. Imagine if the Catholic Church failed to report abuse cases to the authorities and decided instead to institute its own ecclesial courts? Today’s article quotes a Jewish attorney urging law enforcement to recognize “religious sensitivities” for the guilty by seeking alternatives to prison. Allow a Catholic attorney to advise the same and it’s called corruption.

Last year, 40 minors in this small Jewish community said they were abused. Last year, there were 10 such allegations in the entire Catholic Church in all 50 states. Catholics are fed up with the duplicity. It’s not just Roman Polanski who can rape and run with impunity these days. The politics of child rape is sickening.

    Where indeed?

"Where have all the church -and-state advocates been all these years when Orthodox rabbis were allowed by the D.A.’s office to settle these cases “internally”? They are too busy with making sure no one utters "God" or "Jesus" in the schools . Too busy taking down the commandments from courthouses to worry about such things.

The church/state separation advocates have only one goal:

    Marginalize Christianity in America.

They couldn't care less about those kids.

      Disappointed

      Solar,

      This statement:

"The church /state separation advocates [...] couldn't care less about those kids "

Is the single most offensive statement I've ever read from you! I'm a church/state advocate, how dare you accuse people who are trying to keep religion out of government of not caring about molested children ! The two are not even related!

And those that pay attention to religious abuse do, as I do, talk about and care about the Rabbi rape problem. We are not oblivious or hypocrites!

You are smarter than this and you can't be so bat shit nuts to think that those statements are true!

Ok, if you think this isn't accurate...

Why don't you explain to me why there is nothing being done about this?

Why is it that there is so dang much effort to marginalize America's prominent religion when nothing is being done to provide safety for these kids .

You are offended? Well, so am I! I see all the tireless effort in dismantling Christianity, but not a finger lifted to solve this problem.

You don't get to be upset at me for pointing out the inaction of your movement. If you should be upset at anyone, get upset at those who are walking over the broken bodies of these children in order to get the words "God" and "Jesus" out of school children's' mouths.

I am sorry that I pissed you off by pointing out something you cannot see due to you being in the box looking out. I was not meaning that your heart didn't bleed at all, just that it doesn't seem to bleed enough to help make a change .

If you don't like, do more. If you refuse to, don't chalk it up to me being batshit crazy.

    Public Outry

I've read about these stories in multiple newspapers and have seen in on TV twice. This is a well known problem and everyone is equally outraged by the disgusting and exploitative nature.

Also, the Catholic Church is likely getting more attention since their are 11,000 known allegations - substantially larger than any other group. Regardless, it still doesn't justify what the Catholic Church did by saying "oh look nobody cares if the Jews do it" you would be smart if you worry about your own repulsive priests before going after other institutions. Fix your house, before fixing your neighbors.

And there are numerous reports the Catholic Church moved priests from different parishes once they dealt with it; many of the cases were dealt with internally; and they have spent over $1 billion preventing victims from going to trial with them.

The Catholic Church handled this terribly and deserve whatever criticism they get.

Frankly, it's offensive to say that people only care about these abused kids because Catholics did it. You are making excuses for your organization when all of the abusers are equally disgusting, repulsive, and should be prison. And the local divisions of the Catholic Church should be charged with a crimes for attempting to cover up a crime as they are reported to have done many times - but this will never be done because of the irrational public backlash wanting to protect criminals because they have Bishop attached to their name.
