Purrrrr. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors
voted Tuesday to make
disabling declawing cats
illegal, and other California
cities are set to
vote on similar measures this week.
Painful and traumatic,
declawing is really 10 separate amputations in which the last joint of every single toe gets cut off along with the nail. Declawing a cat is the equivalent of
cutting a person's fingers off at the first knuckle and leads to gradual weakening of cats' legs, shoulders, and back muscles. Declawed cats are more likely to have behavior "problems" such as avoiding the litterbox and biting, and they are commonly surrendered to shelters by frustrated guardians.
Germany and other parts of Europe have outlawed declawing as a form of cruelty, and many conscientious veterinarians in the U.S. refuse to declaw because they realize that all someone needs to do to save their furniture (or whatever other lame excuse people come up with to justify mangling their kitties) is take the time to simply
trim their cats' nails and buy proper
scratching posts.
The
Beverly Hills,
Los Angeles, and
Berkeley city councils will be considering or
voting on declawing bans this week, so please tell anyone you know in these cities to send an urgent e-mail to their councilmembers
today.

Thank you for banning cat declawing
We, people who care about animals , people who want to prevent violent animal cruelty , applauded Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi’s heroic and courageous legislation efforts in San Francisco by banning cat declawing. By doing this, Supervisor Mirkarimi has given a voice to the voiceless and eight additional Supervisors echoed that voice today. We hope the reverberations of those voices will be heard and spread to other cities , to other counties, to other states and to other countries.
The United States is behind on this issue of animal cruelty. These city legislations are not just symbolic, making it illegal to declaw cats is a move towards making a change in this country that many of us have been longing for. It is an elimination of a form of violence; it is a move towards peace that starts at home. It is treating animals with respect for who they are with the anatomy that they are born with. This ban on cat declawing connects us ethically and morally with much of the rest of the civilized world that already has humane practices with companion animals in place. We thank Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, other Supervisors in San Francisco and all of the legislators in other cities who are recognizing that declawing is animal cruelty. We thank them all for making it illegal to cut the toes off of cats.
Legislation that makes room for compassion is legislation that is taking care of the heart of a City. For many of us, cats are part of our families and it is important that they are protected by legislation too. We know that San Francisco Supervisors take the time that is needed for multiple issues to all have the nurturing attention that they need. That’s what makes San Francisco the great city that it is today.
