SACRAMENTO --- Just before a midnight deadline, Governor Schwarzenegger late yesterday signed a flurry of bills into
law, including a highly controversial bill that will declare every May 22 as "
Harvey Milk Day" and strongly encourage
schools to celebrate the gay icon.
The bill, SB 572, requires that the Governor (including future governors) proclaim every May 22 as Harvey Milk Day, "and would designate that day as having special significance in public schools and educational institutions and would encourage those entities to conduct suitable commemorative exercises on that date." The bill offers no opt-out provisions for parents who might not want their
children to focus on sexuality for an entire
school day. The new law also affects every grade level. Governor Schwarzenegger had previously vetoed a nearly-identical bill, but some believed that he would sign the measure this time because of recent honors bestowed on Harvey Milk by
Hollywood and President Obama.
SB 572 was authored by openly homosexual Senator Mark Leno of San Francisco. Another bill authored by Leno, that would recognize same-sex marriages from other states, was also signed into law by Schwarzenegger yesterday.
Brad Dacus, president of Pacific Justice Institute, commented, "It is no wonder schoolchildren in California are struggling on standardized tests, when lawmakers continue to promote political correctness in the classroom over academic achievement."

Discussed This ...
twice prior.
How long do you think it will be until they proclaim that this has lead to all of the students becoming homosexual and has let NAMBLA come into our schools to indoctrinate them? Just wondering ...

Why would it?
It is not like any kid will ask their teacher about or why his birthday is celebrated. If they do, the teacher will simply point out that Mr. Milk was a city supervisor for 11 months. End of discussion.
Right?

gay day...
I don't neccessarily agree on the theme of this new acknowledment of Gay History and what a figure Harvey Milk was to the GLBT community, but definetly do believe in speaking and aknowledging our struggle in society . Just as we recognize other "patrons" or hero's to movements that effect all American Society. If you think LGBT issues don't touch on all aspects just read any news. However...I do agree that our children do not need another whole day to focus on subjects other than the academics, but if we did this one, we'd have to do the other ones that give kids a free day or a whole MONTH that focus' on other than basic academic issues. We've removed our children so far from basic curriculum needed to survive and become prosperous, productive memebers of society. Just like is hammered for hetro marriage (the purpose) school is meant to teach the next generation so they know how to move through the world and to work for the greater good of the world, to maintain our great country in the future, and not be ingnorant to how it all works and why. This is not to say I think HMD should not be, I do think he should be recognized and honored for his work on our behalf, I just don't know that we have to have a whole day away from basic curriculm to do it, and to call it "gay day".
We will be called out as having agendas', indoctrinations, ect ect...one finger pointing out 3 pointing back. Again, can't "teach" someone to be gay, just like you can't teach me to be straight...children are naturally curious, smoking , drinking, sex , stealing, are just a few of where they'll adventure to no matter what we do as parents...they need to experience and learn as they go for themselves, we just need to be there to help them when they fall or bump their knees.
