Can Autism be Cured or Managed?

“Your child is autistic.” No parent wants to hear those words. But if they do, treating their child’s autism becomes paramount. Some parents, including advocate and actress Jenny McCarthy, claim to have cured their children’s autism through natural methods. But others insist we should be more focused on managing the disorder than pursuing something elusive. When it comes to autism, what’s the real diagnosis?

Yes for Some Children with Autism, it is Curable.

Dr. Karima Hirani

As a practicing DAN (Defeat Autism Now) doctor, I have had the pleasure of witnessing these recoveries first hand. I have even had the pleasure of going on KCAL 9 News with my recovered patients.

We utilize a number of different biomedical treatments some based on biomedical research, and some based on common sense, to help these patients. For example, methylation is a biomedical reaction that has been found by Jill James PhD to be dysfunctional in autism. ? Methylation is needed to turn on and off genetic material. Since we know there is a genetic susceptibility coming into play with autism, we want to try to naturally influence their genetic makeup, by methylating them. One of the most effective methods we have found to methylate this kids is methylB12 shots given subcutaneously every 2-3 days. With no risk of toxicity to this treatment, thousands of children have improved significantly to the point of recovery. ?

A John’s Hopkins study done in 2005 by Dr. Vargas, on autistic brains (from children who had died for unfortunate reasons), demonstrated that there is inflammation in the brain of autistic children. So what reduces inflammation? Nutrients, including antioxidants. What we do in my office, is extensive biomedical testing to evaluate nutrient and antioxidant status of the child, then seek to correct any deficiencies. This approach is termed megavitamin therapy, and it works.   These children indeed have “starving brains”, which this therapy seeks to correct.

I truly wish this DAN or biomedical approach helped every child with autism, but it does not. The best of DAN doctors and researchers are tirelessly searching for biomarkers to help us determine which children will benefit best from which therapies we have available. In the meantime, every child that walks into my office, the approach is pretty much the same, try everything to see which treatment works.

The government’s role in sponsoring biomedical research is desperately needed in order to provide these therapies to every child, if they are found to be beneficial.
