Does My Vote Matter?

Does My Vote Matter?

According to International IDEA, the United States has almost the lowest voter turnout in the world, ranked a measly 140 out of 163. Perhaps Americans are apathetic, or maybe they’re just concerned their vote is meaningless in the face of America's massive political machine. Can my vote really change the course of politics, or am I just a grain of sand on the massive beach of democracy?

Why Vote? Your Legislators and Governor are Deciding...

League of Women Voters

Your Education…Decisions by our state legislators and the Governor determine how much money is available for CA’s community and state colleges and its UCs.

Your Jobs…From Congress and the President to CA’s State Legislature and Governor…all of these Individuals hold the future of your jobs in their hands. They determine the policies that provide (or not) incentives to locate companies here instead of abroad (or elsewhere), pay employees a “living” minimum wage, require fairness in hiring practices, demand equal pay for equal work, insure workplace safety, and more.

Your Health Care…These same elected officials determine what (if any) health care will be available to you. Their decisions about Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance laws, medical malpractice laws, pharmaceutical laws, etc., determine the health care you receive. Today, more than one fifth of America’s citizens do not have health care insurance.

Your Laws…Not only do these elected officials make laws, they appoint judges whose decisions also become laws. Remember decisions like Brown v Board of Education and Roe v Wade – these were major decisions made by our Supreme Court – a court whose Justices were appointed by a President and confirmed by a Senate – all people elected by voters.

They are deciding:
Your Environment,
Your Public Transportation,
Your Social Security…YOUR FUTURE
