Is Homosexuality a Sin?

Is Homosexuality a Sin?

There has been no shortage of controversy as gay people assume increased roles as parents and married couples in our society, but almost nowhere has this conflict been more intense than in the church. Many religious leaders have condemned homosexuality, calling it a sin or even an abomination, but for millions of gay people around the world, there is nothing inherently sinful about their sexual preferences.

I fell in love with my best friend when I was 17. That’s when I began an earnest quest to find out what the Bible really had to say about homosexuality. Interestingly enough, it addresses the issue right up front in the first chapters of Genesis. God presented to Adam every creature on earth and there was none found comparable. So He created a “suitable” mate for man — a woman. I realized that it is the male/female relationship that God deemed “very good” and no other.

In addition, I found plenty of other Bible passages that clearly defined homosexuality as sin such as Genesis 19:4-11, Leviticus 18:22; 20:13, Judges 19:22, Romans 1:26-27, I Corinthians 6:9 and I Timothy 1:10. And while Jesus never specifically addressed homosexuality, he did echo God’s intent for human relationships and speaks of heterosexuality being the standard in Mark 10:6-9. These answers weren’t what I wanted to hear. I continued to pursue homosexual behavior and told myself, “I don’t care if it’s wrong or not. I can’t help the way I feel.” Still, I could not escape the nagging conflict between my feelings and my faith. I came to the conclusion that I could not ignore what the Bible was telling me and I was going to have to choose to be obedient and trust God with the outcome.
