To End Racism We Must Take Account of Race

In 1978, the US Supreme Court in Regents v. the University of California v. Bakke upheld the use of race as one factor in choosing among qualified applicants for college admission. At the same time, it ruled unlawful the University of California at Davis’ medical school practice of reserving seats in each entering class for disadvantaged minority students. In Bakke, Justice Harry Blackmun wrote "In order to get beyond racism, we must first take account of race. There is no other way." 438 U.S. 265 (1978)

According to Professor Marta Tienda of Princeton University:

"The important lesson is the lesson we learned in 1978. If we want to diversify our institutions of higher education, if we want the public flagships to play a role in creating a community of leaders among all segments of the population, then for the time being -- when we have very egregious inequities in access -- it is necessary to take race into account."

This is pure, unabashed, explicit racism .

Racism isn't just negative. It is the idea that one's race decides one's identity, and that we should look at race when judging someone's character or potential. If we want to end racism, we must stop using race as a valid point of evaluation and instead judge people by their individual identity, character, and skills.

Racism involving hatred and racism involving affirmative action are both based on the same principle - grouping people by the color of their skin or their ethnicity, and taking action based purely on account of race. The name of the topic of this argument is "To End Racism We Must Take Account of Race." Racism is, by definition, taking account of race. We are left with the edict: To end racism, we must be racist . This is illogical and immoral.
