These were the words of President Bush as he spoke about his goals for democracy in the Middle East, but with civil unrest pervading the region, the realization of those goals is very much in question. In a region with such a complex history and unique traditions, can democracy ever truly thrive?

Also, any time an election occurs in the Middle East, voter turnout usually runs over 70%, whether in Iraq or the Palestinian territories or Pakistan. That percentage is higher than most of our elections in the U.S. The Middle East is run by dictatorships. In several polls, the Muslim peoples admire personal freedoms and technology in the United States . What they oppose are our policies.
