Is the U.S. a Christian Nation?

In a 2007 interview with beliefnet.com, John McCain stated that “the Constitution established the United States of America as a Christian nation.” While some were encouraged by McCain's words, others took great offense, reigniting a passionate debate about the intentions of America’s founders. Was the U.S. built on Christian principles, or are we a purely secular nation?

The Framers Were Inspired and Motivated by Scripture

I close simply by restating that our nation was founded upon Judeo-Christian principles.  The framers and their direct descendants were inspired and motivated by the Scriptures.  Our nation would not be what is without these Christian principles. We are losing our Christian heritage through the reinterpretation and outright omission of our founding documents. Certainly as a nation we may no longer want to follow the Christian principles choosing instead to follow secular humanism as our guiding principle. I believe, however, by so doing we are losing the distinctive worldview upon which we were founded.  Let us do so, however, after an honest an open investigation into the truth of our history.  Only then can we make a wise decision.
