Should Iran Be Allowed Nuclear Power?

"Today, we are a nuclear country and we are talking to others from that position." Those were the words of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, explaining his refusal to suspend his country's uranium enrichment program. While many believe that Iran has a right to develop nuclear power, others, including the Bush administration, fear a parallel nuclear weapons program. How should the international community react to Iran’s burgeoning atomic ambitions?

The Correct Question To Be Asked

The correct question to be asked, in my view, is, "What must the international community and Iran do in order to make sure that Iran's nuclear program remains peaceful?" In my opinion, Iran must,

(i) Ratify the Additional Protocol of the SG Agreement, which would grant the IAEA intrusive inspection authority to go anywhere on short notice. Iran signed the AP, and without ratifying it carried out its provisions voluntarily from October 2003 to February 2006.

(ii) Answer truthfully and completely transparently all the legitimate questions - not those fabricated by various intelligence agencies, such as Israel's - in order to demonstrate the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, and

(iii) Suspend for a short, agreed-upon period of time its uranium enrichment program in order to enhance the international community's trust in the peaceful nature of its uranium enrichment program.
