Is Global Warming a Crisis?

Global warming has quickly become one of the most heated issues in America (pun intended). Rising temperatures and melting icebergs are indisputable evidence that the Earth is warming, but is this global heat wave a man-made crisis or just overblown hype?

An overwhelming consensus of scientists say the world is getting warmer because of human activity. The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), formed in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization and the U.N. Environment Programme, have published peer-reviewed, fact-based assessment reports from more than 2,500 contributing scientists, all concluding unequivocally that anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases are rapidly warming the planet.

These findings have been endorsed in hundreds of position papers by reputable scientific societies and organizations, including the International Council for Science, the European Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of the Sciences, the Federation of American Scientists, the American Meteorological Society, the American Geophysical Union, the American Chemical Society, and the National Research Council. While there are varying arguments as to the consequences of climate change, most of these same scientists project environmental, economic, and social ramifications of catastrophic proportions.
