What Should Obama's Priority be After Inauguration?

What Should Obama's Priority be After Inauguration?

On January 20, Barack Obama placed his right hand on the Bible, swore to uphold the Constitution and became the 44th president of the United States. The historical symbolism of this moment was enormous, but the honeymoon won't last long. In fact, it may have already ended. With a crippled economy, a war in two countries and divided nation to contend with, Obama takes office at one of the most troubled times in American history. What should his priorities be once the inauguration celebrations are over?

Right the Economy, Restore Justice and Repair America's Global Image

Muslim Public Affairs Council

President Barack Obama's priorities should be three:  the economy, restoring constitutional governance, and rehabilitating America's image in the global arena.  His agenda will be full, and he cannot deal with one priority to the exclusion of others.

Regarding the economy, the new president needs to invest in national infrastructure projects, which will inject a much needed stimulus to the economy and create hundreds and thousands of jobs.  He needs to develop a "Green" economy platform which will start to invest in environmentally sound energy which will allow America to be a leader "Green" energy development.

President Obama also needs to restore the constitutional parameters in dealing with war and terrorism.  Domestically,  he must reassure citizens and residents and guests that the United States government is committed to the rule of law.  His Justice Department must provide guidelines to safeguard civil rights, privacy and renewed commitment to transparency in government.

Finally, America's image has been severely damaged in the last eight years but it is not irreparable.  Reports that President Obama will sign into executive order the closing of Guantanamo in his first day of office is refreshing.  Furthermore, he must reach out to the Muslim World and engage in partnership for common international interests, including security, nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, hunger and illiteracy. Engage in the Isreali-Palestinian conflict and demonstrate even-handedness.  What Muslims around the world expect from the US is a sense of human dignity in US-Muslim world relations.  That's the least of what we should offer them.
