Should Arkansas Pass the Unmarried Couple Adoption Ban?

Should Arkansas Pass the Unmarried Couple Adoption Ban?

More than 100,000 children are adopted each year in the United States, but it’s never easy trying to determine a child’s best interests. Currently the state of Arkansas is preparing to vote on an initiative that, if passed, would make it illegal for unmarried couples to adopt. No one would dispute that children ought to be cared for, but the question remains, what makes a good home for a child? (Editor's Note: On November 4th, Arkansas voters passed Act 1 to ban adoption for unmarried couples.)

Putting Foster Care and Adoption on the Radar of Arkansans

Arkansas Family Council

The campaign to pass Adoption and Foster Care Act has already brought attention to the need for good families to get trained for foster care and to consider adoption. The state statute won't reduce the number of good homes, since the DHS currently has a policy in place to not put children in cohabiting homes. This merely takes that good policy, expands it to include adoption, and makes it a state law. Thousands of copies of our publication on how to serve as a foster parent and adopt in Arkansas have been distributed and downloaded from our website this past summer as a result of this campaign.
