Should California Pass Prop 8?

Should California Pass Prop 8?

The California Supreme Court abolished the state’s same-sex marriage ban in May, sparking public celebration in some places and angry protest in others. Now some critics of same-sex marriage are fighting back with an initiative to reinstate the ban, leaving voters once again divided. Should marriage remain between a man and a woman, or is it time to widen the aisle for same-sex couples? (Editor's Note: On November 4th, California voters passed Proposition 8 to ban same-sex marriage.)

Prop 8 Singles Out One Group to be Treated Differently

Laurie McBride

Co-Chair, Stonewall Democrats

Proposition 8 is only 14 words long, but it singles people like me out for different treatment. It would tell me that while everyone else has the right to marry their “one irreplaceable person,” that just doesn’t apply to me. Even worse, it writes that unfairness into our state constitution.

Regardless of how you feel about marriage, most Californians agree that people should not be treated differently under the law. That’s what we’re talking about here. You might not want to come by and share a piece of our wedding cake. That’s ok. Just let us live our lives.
