Should California Pass Prop 8?

Should California Pass Prop 8?

The California Supreme Court abolished the state’s same-sex marriage ban in May, sparking public celebration in some places and angry protest in others. Now some critics of same-sex marriage are fighting back with an initiative to reinstate the ban, leaving voters once again divided. Should marriage remain between a man and a woman, or is it time to widen the aisle for same-sex couples? (Editor's Note: On November 4th, California voters passed Proposition 8 to ban same-sex marriage.)

Prop 8 Eliminates Fundamental Rights

Laurie McBride

Co-Chair, Stonewall Democrats

It’s been a giddy, happy summer for California’s couples – finding the right place and the right outfit, sending out invitations to family and friends, writing vows. The thousands of weddings that have taken place so far have shown that none of us have anything to fear when everyone is treated equally.

But now that the campaigns are underway, the opposition is spending millions of dollars on ads that are full of lies and scare tactics. We must reject those tactics so that all Californians are guaranteed the same fundamental rights.

The constitution is the soul of our state, guaranteeing the same rights to all, including the right to marry the person we choose. Proposition 8 would deny that basic right to tens of thousands of people, permanently denying them one of the basic rights of the constitution.
