Does Pornography Harm America?

The Internet explosion has brought the previously underground world of pornography directly to the homes and desktops of thousands of Americans. In fact, porn now grosses an estimated $15 billion annually in the U.S. alone. While some see pornography's popularity as a sign of America's profound moral decay, others believe pornography is harmless -- and even beneficial or educational. Is pornography dirty entertainment or good clean fun?

Porn Doesn't Inspire Violence

Nina Hartley

Actress, Sex Educator, Author

The accusation that porn inspires violence against women is not supported by the facts. According to the Uniform Crime Statistics kept by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the rate of forcible rape declined from 38.1/100,000 in 1986 to 31.7/100,000 in 2005. Where is this epidemic of sexual violence? This propaganda is fueled by the belief that a depiction of sexual activity between adults somehow is “violence.” Conflating paid performances with real life trivializes the experiences of actual victims of violence and sexual assault and is insulting in the extreme. Seeking to transfer the blame for criminal behavior from the perpetrator to some outside trigger goes against the American tradition of personal responsibility and moral integrity.
