Myth: The Human Body is Not Designed for Meat Consumption

thiscop's picture

Some vegetarian groups claim that since humans possess grinding teeth like herbivorous animals and longer intestines than carnivorous animals, this proves the human body is better suited for vegetarianism. This argument fails to note several human physiological features which clearly indicate a design for animal product consumption.

First and foremost is our stomach's production of hydrochloric acid, something not found in herbivores. HCL activates protein-splitting enzymes. Further, the human pancreas manufactures a full range of digestive enzymes to handle a wide variety of foods, both animal and vegetable. Further, Dr. Walter Voegtlin's in-depth comparison of the human digestive system with that of the dog, a carnivore, and a sheep, a herbivore, clearly shows that we are closer in anatomy to the carnivorous dog than the herbivorous sheep.

While humans may have longer intestines than animal carnivores, they are not as long as herbivores; nor do we possess multiple stomachs like many herbivores, nor do we chew cud. Our physiology definitely indicates a mixed feeder, or an omnivore, much the same as our relatives, the mountain gorilla and chimpanzee who all have been observed eating small animals and, in some cases, other primates.

vegan by design

our species did not evolve as carnivores (pcrm.org) the long, intricate, winding human digestive tract is ill-suited to digesting and expelling flesh food which is quickly decomposed. among many other physiological differences. we have no claws for tearing flesh, but rather an opposable thumb and dexterous fingers that evolved for picking fruit , leaves, grasses, berries, ect., and our weak jaws bear no resemblance to those of carnivores. HEART DISEASE, which accounts for almost half of the deaths in the u.s., is indisputably related to the fat and cholestrol in our meat and dairy diet . when arteries are partly blocked, they cannot carry enough oxygen to the heart muscle when it is beating rapidly. this leads to chest pain during exercise or excitement. when the blood supply is completely blocked, the result is the death of part of the heart muscle (myocardial infarction) A HEART ATTACK, the arteries become as hard and brittle as the stem of a clay pipe. they are so full of calcium they are more like rocks than blood vessels. cutting them with a scissor at autopsy makes a distinct crunching sound. this blockage also occurs in the arteries to the brain. when they close off, part of the brain dies A STROKE.

Patricia Robinett's picture

teeth, intestines and much much more...

examine a carnivore's teeth... they are like razor blades... arranged in a narrow snout. carnivores are designed to rip and tear and shred and bolt animal flesh... and yet they still love apples and eat they grass when they are ill.

examine the teeth of an herbivore... they are like human teeth. humans chew and pre-digest carbohydrates (fruits & vegetables & greens) in the mouth. when nature provides a bug or slug in the apple or leaf, no problem... but human teeth are obviously not designed to kill and digest the bodies of animals.

measure the amount of acid in the stomaches of carnivores vs herbivores... carnivores have 10x the acid in their stomaches that humans have in theirs. why? to make quick work of digesting animal flesh.

measure the length of intestines for carnivores and for herbivores... herbivores have complex digestive systems to absorb all the nutrients from their food. carnivores, on the other hand, have short digestive tracts -- to get the meat IN and OUT of their bodies as quickly as possible... why? because holding putrefying flesh in their bodies is very detrimental to their health.

imagine what happens in a human body when it takes days to eliminate animal flesh. apples and grapes do not smell all that bad as they ferment, but the odor of putrefying flesh is very offensive and it pours through the pores of our skin. no wonder the sales of medicines and de-ODOR-ants are so brisk in the USA...

if you need to use deodorants, you might want to rethink your diet.

richardsonkr's picture

Meat does not rot in the body.

That is a myth. It passes through a healthy digestie system in 1 to three days, tops. Food does not rot in the colon. The need to use deoderants stems from sweat glands that release pheremones that smell bad. Vegans stink too. Look at the teeth of other apes, such as chimpanzees. They are very similar to humans, yet have an omnivorous diet, eating plants, insects, and other mammals. The human digestive system is nowhere near that of a cow's in complexity, because we are omnivores, not carnivores, and not herbivores.

Patricia Robinett's picture

how many vegans do YOU know?

how many long-time vegans do you know? and how long have you experimented with being a raw vegan? LOL

vegans -- who combine foods correctly -- will smell differently than those who still eat junk... you can still technically be a 'vegan' and eat junk and combine foods unwisely so they clash and -- like any chemicals, will smell bad. garbage in, garbage out.

my food passes through in a day or less. and it doesn't smell gross... it smells simply like food that has been broken down for nutrient absorption.

i don't use deodorants and my body doesn't smell bad -- except when i eat things that smell bad. raw garlic does not smell bad either on my breath or body or excreta. cooked onions, however, are really smelly when they discharge through my armpits.

i suspect that as long as 'input' remains simple and raw, then it smells like HEALTHY compost. when 'input' is complex and cooked -- it can't help but smell similar to what it would smell like if it was placed in a beaker with hydrochloric acid, and kept at 100+ degrees for as many days as it takes for elimination to occur... and if the food combinations were unwise -- then -- eeyuck!

we can each only tell our own story... you can tell yours, and i can tell mine. yours is limited to your experience, and mine has at least a full range of diets over many decades to compare -- everything from the SAD "standard american diet" to very simple, clean, wisely combined raw vegan diet for 5 years.

when you have been a raw vegan for 5 or more years, eat plenty of greens, and don't mix foods unwisely, check back with me... let me know if you still subject your poor armpits to aluminum deodorants. :) let me know if you still have headaches, back aches, foot aches, or any other dis-ease. :)

you are presently speaking from a certain amount of experience... but not the full range... obviously. in other words, opinion, not knowledge.

Levi's picture

Are you actually claiming this?

Are you actually trying to make the claim that your crap doesn't stink? How very pithy.

Patricia Robinett's picture

you are what you eat

do a test. put some of what you eat in a beaker, add hydrochloric acid and let it sit at 100 degrees for a day or two or three. it will ripen and give off either a pleasant or unpleasant odor.

don't eat those things that give an outcome you find unpleasant.

some foods ferment, like wine or cheese. others putrify - like meat , eggs, dairy. it's not rocket science .

Levi's picture

Are you actually claiming this?

Did you just say that cheese ferments but dairy purifies? Obviously, rocket science isn't your strong suit.

Also, comparing a complicated series of organs like the human digestive system to a beaker of food mixed with hydrochloric acid (which doesn't occur in herbivores, incidentally) is not even close to congruent! The human digestive tract has a host of flora and fauna and enzymes and excretions that work on foods once they've been taken into the body. Meat does not rot because it is being broken down into its constituent parts by various digestive enzymes for use in the human body. Even if it does rot, what's the problem? Eating rotten meat isn't the worst thing in the world. In fact, there are many cultures that eat partially rotten and fermented animal products (and meat DOES ferment in the right conditions , FYI). Properly fermented meats, like many fermented foods, confer specific health benefits .

Patricia Robinett's picture

cheese

cheese is a fermented dairy product. ferment your meat before you eat it and it might be healthier than the meat you buy in the supermarket... washed in ammonia, etc.

locavore's picture

I would never have believed it...

But as my southern cousins would say, I have just "met" someone who honestly in their heart believes "their sh*t don't stink".

Patricia Robinett's picture

poop et al...

when my poop smells bad, i know why and i know how to correct.
it usually begins to smell bad when my diet becomes acid-based:
too many artificial sweeteners and heavy proteins.
so when it smells bad, i know to return to eating more fresh,
raw fruit & greens.
if you pay close attention to your body, it will tell you what you need.
illness doesn't 'just happen'. you never need to be ill.

Levi's picture

Attention to your body

What if I listened to my body and it told me to eat animal products?

Patricia Robinett's picture

if your body ...

if your body is clean and pure and wise and doesn't crave things that are bad for it, then it might be your body's way of asking for something it needs. if the animal product you choose is clean and pure and wholesome, it may fill the need. if so, your body will no longer crave it.

if we were in nature and ate organic fruits directly from trees and bushes, leaves from plants growing in the ground that have not been sprayed, shipped, refrigerated, etc, we would probably get enough B12, for instance, from tiny microscopic bugs that grow on real food . i have local duck eggs occasionally from ducks that are allowed to roam, and it usually takes just a couple to make my body happy. then i wait until it asks for them again. but i wouldn't eat anything i couldn't kill with my own bare hands and fangs, :)

richardsonkr's picture

Trust me, you stink.

Having grown up in California, I have known many hippy-types who don't shave, shower often, use deoderant, or eat animal products. Most of them have claimed not to stink, but I could smell them across the room. I highly doubt that you are any different. Most people don't smell themselves, especially if they've smelled for a long time, but trust me, you do stink, it's just that no one who knows you has had the heart to tell you.

Patricia Robinett's picture

how ugly of you

how very ugly of you.
why have you hung with people who
don't take good care of themselves?
i would never hang with people like that.
why would you?
and why would you connect that to me,
who you do not know? how ugly of you.
how hateful. how rude. how unkind.

my nose is quite acutely tuned to odors.
when i eat cooked food or eat unwise
combinations that clash, i can smell it in
my own body and elimination.
i am quite aware.
was not always -- used to just eat the
SAD diet and was always ill.
now i eat well and am never ill.

i am not a hippie type and never was.
i am a fortune 500 company and legal type.
and i am very, extremely intelligent and wise.
i have learned what works in many
areas of life, including my body.
how is YOUR health? i hope you are well.
but i suspect you are not.

when people advocate for the SAD, even
tho there are so many millions of people
suffering from diabetes, heart disease and
cancer -- i have little faith in their wisdom
or compassion. people don't have to be ill.
but degenerative disease is rampant in the USA.
i hope you are young enough that it has not
hit you yet. i am 62 and have been through
it and come out the other side, much healthier
and much stronger than i ever was when i ate
either SAD or cooked vegetarian food.

The Truth ain't Pretty

While I try not to be "ugly," sometimes the truth isn't pretty. While I generally try to avoid personal attacks, and generally call out those who use them, in this case, it is not ad hominem, a logical fallacy, because you claimed to not need nor use deoderant because of your diet, while vegetarianism can contribute to, not detract from, body odor, and body odor is also caused by glands completely unrelated to diet.
http://www.health911.com/remedies/rem_bodyo.htm
The following quote is from the above link:
"Because of a person's body chemistry, some people who eat LARGE QUANTITIES of meat or who ARE VEGETARIANS have a very distinctive body odor which can be quite offensive." (emphasis added)
Also, "Sweat glands (apocrine glands) under the arms and in the groin secrete a substance that is the major non-food/drink related cause of body odor. This substance, which contains protein, carbohydrates, and lipids, often secreted by a surge in sex hormones caused by tense moments or emotional stress, is quickly attacked by bacteria, causing odor." Basically, everybody smells, though stressed people or those who eat either too much or too little meat smell worse. I apologize for attacking you, but it was necessary. The above is saying it more politely.

And just to clarify, I do not "hang" with, nor have I ever "hung" with people who don't take care of themselves. I have known them, (not in that way) but have never been friendly. My health is excellent, and requires a large amount of both animal and plant protein to keep it so, if you must know, though you are correct in your assumption that I am still young, and in that I probably will have health problems when I get older, not because of meat, but because of all the other abuse I put my body through. I do apologize for calling you out so harshly. A bit of tact may have been called for.

Patricia Robinett's picture

thank you for your apology

thank you for your apology. i wish you a long and healthy life. and i appreciate the article you linked to at health911.com -- excellent.

i find it interesting that the author of that page says that body odor is a result of toxicity... imbalance in metabolism... and recommends a thorough detox program to cleanse the liver, kidneys and colon. i know of no better detox program than a raw food diet -- and i was a personal friend of robert gray who wrote 'the colon health handbook' and developed that cleansing program 20 or 30 years ago. 'detox' is my way of life. :)

in fact, that author states it is the 'person's body chemistry' that causes the problems of body odors: breath, foot, sweaty hands, etc... he/she even spells out which foods are especially troublesome and states that there are remedies to odors -- eliminating foods that cause those odors.

my diet consists nearly 100% of fruits and greens, plus carrot juice, ginger and garlic. i have some pet chickens now and they started laying eggs a month ago, so i am also now eating very fresh eggs from very healthy chickens.

no body -- and nobody -- naturally 'stinks'... this is an acquired ability thanks to habits... eating, drinking, smoking, using drugs -- in an unwise fashion. if your body is clean, you will smell like what you eat. if you eat fish, you will smell like fish; if you eat brussels sprouts, you will smell like brussels sprouts; if you eat grapes and raisins, you will smell like wine; if you eat apples and greens, you will smell like apples and greens. the author of the article you refer to says that 'dietary imbalances resulting in constipation or a deficiency of magnesium or zinc may be other causes of body odor'. greens are an excellent source of magnesium. chlorophyll is used as a deodorizer.

thanks for the great link to a great website. i will bookmark it and refer to it as i do my research... i love to learn new things.

again -- i wish you well.

snthdiueoa's picture

Really?

Wow. I have never in all my years actually met someone who claims their shi...Or no wait, their "elimination" doesn't stink. Stand back, Science, for the mighty PATRICIA ROBINETT has put to shame all your lowly studies and "proof." Despite hundreds of years of experiments, individuals who have devoted their careers (they're called dietitians, not the " law type") to the study of food , and common sense, Patricia here has disproved it all. Certainly, because her individual experience has led her to believe she has eliminated body odor, that must be a universal truth. No other explanation would suffice other than eating half-cooked rabbit food has led to her almost super-human health , including a life free from pain, odor, or any major malady.

Truly, you are the epitome of the self-centered, self-righteous vegan. Here, try some literature that suggests you and your diet aren't God's gift to Earth: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/08/fashion/08Skin.html?_r=1

So maybe the fact that you have the luxury of being so well off you can support farm life at your house, as well as afford to eat only the freshest, most unpreserved and uncooked foods on the planet has more to do with what you smell like than the food itself. Or the fact that your 60 some years old and probably don't move around quite as much as you did in your wild and crazy omnivorous days.

Your dappling in comparative Biology is laughable at best. Don't insult science with your half conceived abortions of opinions.

Finally, you want a detriment to health? Farming. We evolved as hunter/gatherers. When we hunted/gathered, we had great teeth, diabetes and heart disease were unheard of, and in the absence of villages or cities to breed and spread disease we were pretty darn healthy. When we started cultivating we created the ability to live in one place, we became more sedentary. Our communities grew larger and larger and close quarters led to increased disease transmission. But maybe we have evolved so only your lifestyle makes sense? Look at the Inuits. Their diet is composed primarily of BLUBBER. That's right, pure fat. Yet somehow they manage to sport health beyond what most of us dream of. Cholesterol is no issue, their teeth are great, heart disease is non-existent. But how could they do this without mimicking Patricia'a life down to the T? That just doesn't make sense...

Patricia Robinett's picture

vegetarians are kinder, gentler, more peaceful...

first, keytud, you use a pseudonym. that indicates you do not wish to hide, to not take responsibility for your opinions, criticisms, accusations and name-calling. that is understandable. who would want to be identified as the author of such a post? i take posts more seriously when they are written by people who are honest and open and transparent.

second, it sounds as if you are jealous of those who might make wise choices. the good news is, you don't have to be rich to eat wisely. it costs no more to choose to make a green smoothie with a couple of apples and kale than it does to eat a bowl of manufactured cereal or a big mac with fries... yes, i have a small garden... very small. and i share it with the slugs & bugs & deer who live around here. i do recommend everyone have a 'garden', even if it's just a few herb pots inside your home. add fresh herbs to your foods & that alone will improve your disposition.

third, i see you belong to a religion called '$cience'. you might want to read the articles that have come out about how '$cientists' and their 're$earch' are funded by industry. if they don't support the profit$ of industry, then they do not get grant$. now i ask you, keytud, how $cientific is that? i remember when the '$tudy' came out 'proving' that $ugar did not cause hyperactivity in children ... mothers all over the world were laughing.

next, IF the body is a communication device -- and IF your poop is a very private form of feedback -- and IF it has to mirror not only an acidic diet , but also a bitter, sour, envious, etc mind -- then it would behoove you to reconsider both diet and thought system.

poop is honest feedback about what you put into your body. and you put into your body what you choose and you can change what you put into it. poop tells you the condition of your physical state. experiment. see what happens if you go for a few weeks on green smoothies. of course, it may take a while to clear out a lifetime of poor eating habits, but if you persist until you are truly healthy, you may find the odor of your feedback will change for the better. you deserve to be happy and healthy and to have clean smelling elimination.

beware of what you eat. it can kill you in more than one way. i heard that one guy died in a room full of the odor of cabbage and beans... the rescue workers were also overcome. mustard gas has been used as a weapon of mass destruction.

long story short, $cience reports what industry wants it to report.
and lastly, keytud, you may put the inuit on a pedestal, but after looking them up, i don't. however... i would suggest the characters in robbins' book... "Healthy at 100". http://www.healthyat100.org/display.asp?catid=2&pageid=28

"From Abkhasia in the Caucasus south of Russia, where age is beauty, and Vilcabamba in the Andes of South America, where laughter is the greatest medicine , to Hunza in Central Asia, where dance is ageless, and finally the southern Japanese islands of Okinawa, the modern Shangri-la, where people regularly live beyond a century, Robbins examines how the unique lifestyles of these peoples can influence and improve our own."

g'luck, darlin. i wish you well. i wish you happiness, health and longevity.

Yea?

Go ahead and Google Keytud. Every one of the hits is me, even my facebook .

Take a look at my facebook, see the pretty girl next to me? That's my little Vegan. Beautiful isn't she? Smart, too. Smart enough not to force her ideals on other people because she knows that just because she chooses not to eat animal products, it does not mean everyone who does is wrong.

I am as much a slave to $cience as you are. Although I must admit you are free to deny such things as our crazy theory on gravity and such. My particular brand of science is biology. If you had even the most rudimentary knowledge of it, you'd have understood from those articles that sugar doesn't cause hyperactivity; it exacerbates it in children who already have the condition. You also might understand that the primary cause of body odor has nothing to do with what you eat. Rather, the bacteria that live on your skin and thrive on your excretions.

You think science is so terrible? The first example that comes to mind is golden rice. Big Bad Science needed to address the rampant Vitamin A deficiencies in China, where the main staple is rice. So they spliced a gene to produce Vitamin A in a new strain of rice. Science also has pest resistant crops that would reduce the need for pesticides, other foods with more fortified supplements to increase the nutritional value, and even just size; the vast mojority of which aren't available for use because of the knee jerk hatred of genetically modified food . Of course Green Peace puts their blinders on and condemns all GM foods the work of the devil...But that's for a different place and time.

As for the man who supposedly died of his own gas, he was morbidly obese, and could not escape the bed he was in, let alone the room. Interestingly enough, I read one of the reasons his gas was so terrible was his affinity for cabbage...

you are VERY young

well, keytud, you are very young. your friend is very pretty. bodies are communication devices. she looks like a vegan. you look like a meat -eater.

no one is forcing ideals on anyone. i don't get off on debate. i do like to educate. i am simply stating my opinion, my experience and my hope for a healthier, happier future for everyone.

i've been doing research on this subject since i was your age. i'm 3x your age now and i've never stopped researching, reading, using my body as a lab, sharing what works for me with others and seeing it work for them too. i've been through 5 or so years of college . i have probably studied as many biology classes or more than you have at your tender age.

i have read plenty of 'scientific' research. some has indeed been tainted by vested interests and studies that are obviously pushing an agenda. tune your nose... don't believe everything you read. question everything... not just people who say that their poop doesn't smell. sorry that irks you.

if you go into medicine , i hope you will resist the trap of believing that simply finding pathology is wisdom and prescribing medicine & performing surgery is 'good' for people. i pray that scalpels will be melted down into plowshares soon. cutting is not necessary. medicines are not necessary. there are other ways to take care of illness, to return people to health . populations actually do much better when doctors are sent to war or doctors go on a strike... fewer deaths by far.

excellent read: "Toxic Sludge is Good for You." find out about eddie bernays. americans ate very little meat until he became a shill for the food and drug industries. american women did not smoke or spend their days outside the home for a paycheck until he worked his magic on the american mind. america went into WWII thanks to eddie bernays' public relations work.

i do not think science is 'terrible', but i do know that you will have to bend to the will of vested interests if you want to get scholarships, grants, teach in colleges, do research. i remember one doctor telling me that the AMA would destroy him if they found out that he actually had come up with a cure for cancer . that was 25 years ago. he had been at the NIH when they outlawed a viable solution for cancer that is still used in other countries -- based on a superficial taste test. imagine if he actually had been able to put it in the public eye... how many millions would be alive today -- including my mother.

question, keytud... question. question everything and everyone. do not buy into the anti-life system of things. read john robbins' books. don't be ashamed to respect and admire your girlfriend's wisdom as much as you appreciate her beauty and sweetness.

try to let go of stubbornness. it's been the downfall of many. study about how to let food be your medicine... many do these days. i hope you are healthy, strong, clear-minded and still virile when you are 62... no reason why you can't live to 100 in JOY if you cooperate with nature. :)

hmm...

Logically, your points make sense.
Yet according to vrg.org , "The short canines in humans are a functional consequence of the enlarged cranium and associated reduction of the size of the jaws...... Interestingly, the primates with the largest canines (gorillas and gelada baboons) both have basically vegetarian diets."

Also, the majority of plant-eating animals fermenting sacs (part of their digestive system). Humans have no such thing.

As for intestines, "Intestinal absorption is a surface area, not linear problem. Dogs (which are carnivores) have intestinal specializations more characteristic of omnivores than carnivores such as cats. The relative number of crypts and cell types is a better indication of diet than simple length. We are intermediate between the two groups." (also from vrg.com)

Humans are supposed to be omnivores. Our bodies say so too. People shouldn't go vegan because of anatomy....

hmm???

snouts:
humans do not have narrow jaws/snouts with razor-sharp teeth like meat-eaters. they have wide jaws with a rack of fairly tame teeth. try hunting down an animal and killing and shredding its flesh with your nails and teeth. report back to me. i look forward to hearing what happens. no fair using a dead animal and a knife and fork. :)

'fermenting sac'???:
which animals have a 'fermenting sac'? is there a more precise term for that? i can't find it when i search. thanks. do primates? we are primates.

intestines:
plants require slow absorption. perhaps you could call the intestines a 'fermenting sac'.

you use vrg.com as your sour source. i do not agree with much of the info on it. sorry. anyone can say anything on a website. having a website does not mean you have walked the walk. your own body is your laboratory. yes, experiment - but always listen very closely to its feedback. that is called 'wisdom'.

i did not become a raw vegan because my tastebuds told me to do it. i became a raw vegan because my body led me to eating simpler and simpler foods... my body didn't like meat, fish, eggs or dairy -- even tho my tastebuds wanted it to... my tastebuds would love to live on chocolate ice cream, steak tartare and escargot with LOTS of garlic butter. LOL

my body revolted. i don't like being sick or tired or ugly, so i listened.

my body is much happier now. looks better, feels better, and life is simple. when i read the data, it supported my new dietary choices. read the 25-year cornell university study that was performed in china. 'the china report' i believe it's called. its conclusion: the more animal food you eat, the unhealthier you will be. simple.

read victoria boutenko's 'greens for life'. she has done some very good research.

chlorophyll is only one ion different chemically from hemoglobin. we don't need to eat animals... we need to eat greens.

from an evolutionary standpoint

"humans do not have narrow jaws/snouts with razor-sharp teeth like meat -eaters. they have wide jaws with a rack of fairly tame teeth. try hunting down an animal and killing and shredding its flesh with your nails and teeth. report back to me. i look forward to hearing what happens. no fair using a dead animal and a knife and fork. :)"

Our ancestors were using tools and cooking their food long before they were H.Sapiens... as such our physiology has adapted to such things.

It's called a rumen.

The "fermenting sac," as it was referred to, is called the rumen. Cows and other herbivores also have multiple stomachs and have to "chew the cud." If you ever start chewing cud, let me know.

The human brain can choose a healthier option

Just because we can eat meat doesn't mean we should.

Veganism is healthier for our bodies, for our conscience, for other people, for animals, and for the planet. Go vegan!

Why vegan?

The healthier option is eating animal product.

Because we can eat meat is exactly why we should eat meat. We are animals , evolved to be most successful on a specific diet . Therefore, that is the diet for which we are best suited. In no other sphere of animal research or care would we ever even consider feeding an animal an unsuitable diet. It would be considered neglect at best, abuse at worse.

Going vegan is a moral consideration and has very little to do with what is healthiest for humans.
