Does Islam Promote Violence?

For most Americans, Islam was a religion that lived on the periphery of their lives, a culture they caught glimpses of in movies and television shows. Then came the tragic events of 9/11, and suddenly the Western world was desperately grasping to understand a religion they knew precious little about. With all the questions swirling around the true nature of Islam, none has been asked more than this: Does Islam promote violence?

Muslim Religious Leaders Promote Culture of Violence

American Values

That some Muslims have an appetite for destruction is not surprising given the tendency of prominent Muslim leaders to foment hatred of the West. In 2006, following Pope Benedict's remarks at Regensburg about the relationship between faith and violence, Imams across the Middle East and North Africa issued fatwas for his death. Similar threats were made in advance of the pope's visit to Turkey. Meanwhile in France in 2006, the Interior Ministry announced that Muslims waged an undeclared "intifada" against police, with attacks injuring an average of 14 officers a day.  A study sponsored by the Center for Security Policy found that of 100 American mosques and Islamic centers and schools it examined, “75 should be on the watch list” for inciting insurrection and jihad through sermons and anti-western literature.

Experts estimate that 80 percent of American mosques are funded by Saudi Arabia, which, according to a study by Freedom House's Center for Religious Freedom, disseminates propaganda though American mosques that teaches "Nazi-like hatred of Jews" and Christians and spreads the radical Wahhabist ideology shared by Osama bin Laden and the 9-11 attackers. Freedom House also found that many American mosques "promote contempt for the United States because it is ruled by legislated civil law rather than by totalitarian Wahhabi-style Islamic law."
