Parents face so many difficult decisions when it comes to having a child: decisions about nursing, sleep patterns, discipline, teaching methods and, in the case of boys, whether or not to circumcise. In addition to being the most common surgery for males in the U.S., circumcision has been practiced in various cultures for centuries. Yet when it comes to the health and best interest of your newborn, is circumcision the way to go?

Foreskin infections and permanent inability to retract the foreskin due to a tiny opening at the tip (phimosis) are limited to uncircumcised males, and can require circumcision later in life when the procedure is more difficult and complications more common than in the newborn period. Local skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis are seen twice as often in uncircumcised males. It has been found that 7-10% of uncircumcised males will be circumcised later in life for local problems with the foreskin.
