Is There a God?

Is There a God?

The existence - or lack of - a God is one of humanity's fundamental questions. Since the first birth, the first sunrise, the first death, humans have sought to explain the world around them. The whole of human existence, in the end, comes down to this: Is there a God?

Beyond the question of what God is there is the question of what might be called God’s “output”: the things God supposedly does or has done. For some, God is the creator and sustainer of the universe. For others, God created the universe so well that it doesn’t need sustaining. And for still others, the universe existed before God. Then there’s the question of whether the universe young or old.

This leads to other questions. Has there been no evolution, some evolution, or is evolution God’s method of creation? Does God intervene in nature with special acts called miracles? Does God answer prayer or strike bad people with lightening, plagues, locusts, and so forth? Does God cause good people to be good and bad people to be bad? Or does another god called Satan play a role here? Indeed, who is responsible for the evil in the world: God, Satan, or human beings with a divine power called Free Will?? ?

Despite these problems, it will still be useful to denote certain general categories of the god idea and then determine appropriate responses to each. That is what will now follow.
