Impacts Teens

Just a few years ago, pornography was only available in
“adult bookstores.” Today it is available 24/7, and often times for free, to
not only adults but also children and teens through television, movies, magazines
and the Internet. Pornography promotes the lie that sex with anyone, under any
circumstance, anytime has no negative consequences. In the scientific journal Mind,
Medicine and Adolescence
, they determined
that using pornographic materials leads to several behavioral, psychological
and social problems in the future such as sexual aggressiveness, hostility and
violence, as well as an increase in sexual crimes, sexual dysfunction and
family breakdown.

A neurosurgeons review on addiction . Its a start to asking some important questions on pornographies effect on the brain and whether its harmful or not. Read it with an objective eye. Its a start to a good "yes" argument.

and now as an adult who regularly views porn there has been NO increase in anger. In fact because of porn one can live out fantasies from behind the computer.

On a recent camping trip with a Boy Scout troop I had caught a couple scouts watching pornography , while there were other scouts that I would of suspected to watch it, it certainly wouldn't of been these two model scouts. After catching them I have noticed more of the unclean portions of their conversations, such as; a disrespect for woman, disrespect for their girlfriends trust, inappropriate comments, among others, that have seemingly stemmed from watching pornography. Boy Scouts are suppose to be clean in thought, morally straight, trustworthy, and loyal. These goals set forth are not hard to accomplish, after these goals have helped other scouts in my troop and me, they have improved our way of life, shown us that there is a certain decency that we need, and how to utilize this decency to take on new challenges and to help others and improve out communities, and america as a whole.

Children speak out against sexual exploitation
Posted: Thursday, November 20, 2008, 10:52 (GMT)Font Scale:A A A

Children from around the world are speaking out against sexual exploitation and internet and video pornography , and are calling on authorities to better protect them and future generations from abuse on Universal Children's Day today.

The results of two years of focus groups involving more than 400 boys and girls on four continents clearly demonstrated that, despite efforts to tackle exploitation of many differing kinds, widespread sexual abuse is still causing misery to children worldwide, says Christian development agency Tearfund.

Young people in Thailand described how some parents have taken their children to be prostituted, naming the hotels where such things happen.

“The hotel owner is the agent. Both Thai people and foreigners buy sex. In some cases, a 60-year-old man pays for sex with boys as young as five years old. These men are wealthy. The parents take their children to the hotel to do this.”
Some teachers put pressure on children too. Participants reported how boys were abused by a group leader in a school for detained children.

Children from Vietnam explained, “Some teachers could take advantage of bad grades for sexual abuse. For example, if a child lets a teacher abuse him or her, he or she can get a better grade.”
There is, however, also a growing concern among children about the impact of the internet, said World Vision. Children revealed they were worried about the ways pornography and new technologies are making them vulnerable to sexual exploitation. So they are calling on governments to censor web-based material.

“We desperately hope those attending the conference, particularly
government ministers, will listen to what the children have to say,” said Mrs Hoffman Hanchett.

“Children understand how other children are hurt, and they have recommendations and ideas about the solutions. Protecting
children from sexual abuse is everyone’s business and we pray that each delegate will take up the call to protect children from sexual exploitation, whether domestic or commercial.”

WE MUST STOP PORNOGRAPHY AND PROTECT CHILDREN FROM EXPLOITATION NOW.PORN. HARMS AMERICA BECAUSE IT HARMS KIDS!!!

You are referring to child exploitation, which is a problem... but all pornography is not child exploitation.

Pornography didn't move from the adult bookstores a few years ago but in the mid-80s. Was pornography harmful in the adult bookstore but not in the video store? Is it now harmful again now that it is on the internet ? If this is true then why did all the national anti-porn organizations oppose an adult top level domain that would have created a virtual back room like the video stores?
Hardcore pornography on the internet is not illegal. It is illegal to distribute in some states but not in others. And not illegal to have it on your computer. So if the porn comes from a server in a state where it is legal there is no problem. Pornography could be regulated but it can not be stopped. And yet organizations that claim to be against pornography have been against attempts to regulate it. If pornography is harmful then what should we do?

F2XL's picture

...but for different reasons. From what I can tell pornography is something people flock to because they missed out on a real relationship. And addicting is an understatement.

UltraConservative's picture

Ponography is an addiction much like drugs and alcohol. Once a person is involved in it, it is very difficult to get them away from it. It leaves a lasting impression on the mind that cannot be just errased. I agree... addicting is an understatement.
Approach this from a moral stand point. Should teen agers be viewing that stuff? No, they experiment enough with sex without it.

Naumadd's picture

Perhaps, it is appropriate for one to say - "A teenager with whom I'm charged responsibility will not be allowed access to pornography." There is no fact or argument with which you can extend your personal preferences against pornography to justify the statement "teenagers in general ought not be viewing that stuff". In one world, you may or may not be charged with determining what teenagers in general may or may not view. Nevertheless, in this world, you are certainly not, nor can you be. No one can be charged with such authority or power by right. It can only be granted by privilege and wrongly so at that.

It is rather irrational and more than a little barbaric to make blanket judgments against and decisions for what amounts to a population of unique individuals all of whom are in unique circumstances. Unless one wishes to become a tyrant and face the usual fate of tyrants, perhaps it is best to simply allow individuals to decide for themselves what is best for themselves. It is, after all, their right to choose "heaven" or choose "hell" and, indeed, their right to define them both without unjustified compulsions.

In any event, you cannot rightly justify an extension of your individual rights to the curtailment of the rights of others. Over and over again, men try ... and men fail.

Adam Hammond's picture

I'm glad you made this point. The discussion of rights should be more prominent in this argument. From what prerogative are people seeking to limit the behavior of adult Americans? They do not appear to be arguing for more effective age restrictions for minors, but for broad censorship.

noggie's picture

I think that people making porn should be AT LEAST 21 but closer to 25 because our emotional/rational brains aren't fully developed until around 25. People under 25 are unable to fully predict the consequences for their actions - so all of these people running off to do porn aren't developed in terms of their brain enough to fully consent to making porn.
And that's the sad aspect of this too - most women doing porn are probably more like 18 to 21 (or even younger because porn industries always violate the age restrictions). What is scary is that I'm 28 years old and many people have said that I look 12-16 years old. If I can look as young as a 12 yr old, that means a 12 yr old can possibly look 28... So people never really know for sure they aren't wankin' off to child porn.

UltraConservative's picture

It is a distorted premise to say what you have stated here. It is not barbaric, a tyrant, etc. to say that teen agers in general should not be viewing this stuff. Pornography and my stand against it comes from experience with dealing with people who are addicted to it. Teens have no business viewing it, yet it happens every day. Does it affect them? Yes it does. To say it does not, is to say that drugs and alcohol and smoking has no affect on them either.
Dealing with addiction is something I deal with on a daily basis. My premises are not preferences, they are reality.

Naumadd's picture

What you state here implies complete knowledge of all teenagers - a knowledge you cannot have. Although you may have dealt with addicted teenagers, experiences with those teenagers cannot be extended to mean knowledge of all teenagers. Further, knowledge of some teenagers cannot be extended to mean knowledge of all people. You wish to make generalized statements about all pornography and the relationship of all people to it. At best, this is irrational. At worst, assuming you wish to support the notion that pornography is bad for America with the implication you would support laws banning it outright throughout the land is tyrannical and barbaric.

Your statement "Teens have no business viewing it (pornography)" is unsupportable. At most, you can support the statement "Some teens ought not view pornography." I would agree with that. It has the virtue of being supportable and offers no road to complete censorship for all people.

noggie's picture

Teens have no business drinking alcohol - would you argue with that statement? I mean, not all kids abuse alcohol...so therefor they should have free range to it?
Like you - I don't believe porn should be illegal - however, I think that it needs to be attacked criminally because there is a lot of criminal activity going on within the porn industry and it needs to be regulated. Instead - because it is so popular and people want to defend it constantly, rather than deal with the facts, it gets brushed under the rug and ignored, meanwhile more women are going to be needing mental health because of the PTSD/ drug addictions they are facing.

F2XL's picture

He didn't actually say we should BAN pornography altogether (something I think is unrealistic) and that it affects everyone the same, he was simply pointing out that there are SOME teens who have had problems; he wasn't trying to extend that to everyone.

ebsarver's picture

I followed your link, and examined the study for myself. It turns out that the study you cite does not prove anything of the kind. On the contrary, what the study did in fact prove, was that men will answer hypothetical questions hypothetically. The researchers asked men if they would rape a woman if there were no consequences, and then based their findings on men's answers.

Forgive me, but where's the scientific method here? Would it not make more sense to examine...oh, I don't know...ACTUAL CRIME STATISTICS and draw conclusions from that instead of from something unreliable like hypothetical questions about unrealistic situations where there are no consequences? Come on! This "evidence" you've posted to support a "yes" contention doesn't have any science in it at all. It's pure hyperbole.

JMT's picture

The evidence presented by the "yes" organization is extremely faulty, produced either by similarly minded advocacy organizations or sites with either ideological or financial stakes in hawking these messages. This is not science. A search of Google, Google Scholar and the journals held by the National Library of Medicine--the nation's premier collection of peer-reviewed journals in the human and medical sciences, as well as the collections of two University of California library systems produces no results for the journal Mind Medicine and Adolescence, the primary reference for this side's argument. I suggest that the "yes" side seek to legitimize their evidence before presenting it as truth to the rest of America.
