Families That Choose Homeschooling Are Not Condemning Their Children

While homeschooling is not the right choice for every family, those families that choose it are not condemning their children to a second-rate education, nor are these children failing to acquire the skills that will enable them to become productive members of society. Research shows that these children become active in the civic and political lives of their communities at higher levels than traditionally-educated peers.  They also develop excellent leadership skills. In an evaluation of the college performance of three matched sets of students (one set of homeschooled students, one set of privately schooled students, and one set of publicly schooled students), the homeschooled students scored first in 42 of 63 performance indicators, including positions of leadership. The study author concluded that the homeschooled students “were readily recognized for their leadership abilities.” A researcher at the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education at the University of Toronto praised homeschooled adults for being “well-versed in basic business principles,” and as having the “discipline to either run their own business or become quite focused employees.”

My brother and I were both homeschooled by our mom who works full time. She was not there to teach during the day and so we learned to be independent in learning. I have had help, but, for the most part, self-taught myself subjects such as calculus. When I had a answer wrong and did not know how to fix it, I would figure it out on my own. Not because my mom wouldn't help, but because she couldn't. Our mom only had a high school diploma, but is a skillfull writer. I truly dislike English and Composition myself, but have become far above average from her teaching. She never pushed hard on curriculum, but instead on working hard at everything I did.

Knowledge is not something that is acquired, but something that is sought after. No matter where you learn, you must have a desire. Whether it be public school or home school, the people who desire to learn will learn. The biggest problem with public school is the masses of people who would rather not be there. The classes are mostly spent force feeding meaningless information An example would be all the dates and events you learn in history, when instead you could be learning the effects, motivation, signifigance, and mistakes of an event.

Being sheltered from drugs, violence, alcohol, etc... is not pampering a kid. Think about it. Many times a kid will get involved in drugs and their life is ruined. Yeah, you may overcome it, but you probaly wasted years of your life. Most of my friends chew, drink, or are having sex. But I've been able to escape the peer pressure.

Now, I am in college full-time and suceeding acedemically, making friends, and am able to enjoy it. All as a Junior in high school and playing varsity sports at the high school. I am not saying at all that homeschooling is better than public school. What I am saying is that parents should have the option (as well as the kids) to whatever education they please (This is a democracy, Right?!). And also that where they learn is not as important. It is something that makes America great. It expands the variety of backgrounds.

*Please excuse bad grammar and random subject changes. I wrote this up rather quick*
