Pregnant moms need adequate protein, but not all protein sources are as safe as they can be.

About two-thirds of the cattle used to provide our meat have been treated with artificial growth hormones. Although the FDA has deemed that these hormones are safe, these toxins are present in the meat we consume. Pollutants, including antibiotics, growth hormones, and other chemicals) are concentrated in animal products, particularly in fats. Animal fats contain contaminants such as pesticides, dioxins, and PCBs. As you consume animal fats, these chemicals accumulate in your body. They can also be transmitted to the unborn fetus and through breast milk to your newborn.

A diet low in animal fat may help prevent contamination during pregnancy and infancy. Deriving necessary protein from grains and legumes, seeds and nuts, can help reduce exposure to toxins while still satisfying dietary requirements for pregnancy. Moms who consume animal products should look for organic, free-range options or trusted local farmers who can provide safe and nutritious alternatives.
