“Your child is autistic.” No parent wants to hear those words. But if they do, treating their child’s autism becomes paramount. Some parents, including advocate and actress Jenny McCarthy, claim to have cured their children’s autism through natural methods. But others insist we should be more focused on managing the disorder than pursuing something elusive. When it comes to autism, what’s the real diagnosis?
In the seventies, before any actual medical research was done, autism was thought to be a purely psychological condition. Since then research has shown a wide variety of physical problems in large percentages of people with autism. Everything from evidence of brain inflammation to gastro-intestinal issues have been documented. Treatment for these health conditions is resulting in better cognition, behavior and life in general for people with autism, some to the point of losing the “autism” diagnosis.
