Several well-endowed sources of funds give a lot of money to anti-gun "researchers" to produce "studies" that support the gun control groups' agenda. But independent researchers have analyzed the methods used in these studies and found them flawed. The notion that having a gun makes you less safe is one of the allegations coming from those studies, particularly the so-called Kellermann 43-to-1 piece.

Award winning criminologist Gary Kleck analyzed the National Crime Victimization Surveys and determined that people who use guns to defend themselves are less likely to be injured, than people who use other means, or no means of defense. Day after day, newspapers around the country report instances where private citizens have successfully used firearms to defend themselves against criminals in their homes, in their businesses, and out in public. Separately, Kleck conducted the landmark study of defensive gun uses in the early 1990s, and found at that time that guns were used for protection more than two million times annually. Kleck's methodology was reviewed and endorsed by the leading anti-gun researcher at the time, the late Marvin Wolfgang.

The Library of Congress, National Academy of Sciences, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Congressional Research Service, and independent researchers under the auspices of the National Institute of Justice have found no evidence that gun control reduces crime.
