What's the Best Style of Yoga?

Ashtanga, Jivamukti, Kundalini. These aren't exotic foods, they're a sampling of the many styles of yoga commonly practiced in homes, studios and gyms worldwide. Should you stretch more and breathe less? What about posture? Depending on the type of yoga you choose, you'll either find yourself feeling completely rejuvenated, or wondering what you woke up early for. Which style is best for you?

Consider the Goals of the Individual Yoga Practitioner

The benefits of yoga are vast. A yoga practice not only enhances strength and flexibility, it can also combat depression, ease anxiety, and aid a host of physiological concerns, including reproductive difficulties, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory problems. The style that is appropriate for each practitioner depends in part on his / her initial goals. A practitioner looking to address anxiety or other emotional issues will probably get maximum benefit from a mellow, relatively gentle yoga style such as Kripalu. A student who is interested primarily in physical exercise and building endurance would likely prefer a more challenging style like Ashtanga. In contrast, Iyengar yoga is known for its therapeutic applications and deep understanding of anatomy and physiology. This reputation make it an excellent choice for anyone looking to address specific physical health concerns.

I do not mean to suggest that any particular style of yoga is insufficient for addressing individual needs and desires. But it is likely that certain practitioners will identify more strongly with one style than another.
