Should the Internet be Free?

If you’re reading this now, chances are you’re online. In the past decade the Internet has become a central force in our lives, responsible for everything from our bank accounts to our celebrity gossip, and with technology so prevalent some are now arguing for free broadband access. Should surfing the Net remain a cash business, or is it time for free admission into cyberspace?

Civil Society Provides For its Constituents and Fights Discrimination.

In much the same way that free access to primary education, parks and roads, and fire and police protection are fundamental aspects of living in a civil society, in an information age, universal access to the Internet is critically important. Constituencies and communities without Internet access face increasing discrimination in all aspects of their life (from education to health care to job opportunities and access to news). Within a civil society, we have a responsibility to prevent discriminatory practices that directly target already-disadvantaged groups -- universal Internet access is an opportunity to reverse these trends and support all facets of civil society.
