Should Women Breastfeed in Public?

Should Women Breastfeed in Public?

Breastfeeding is a natural biological function, but is there a time and a place for it? Nearly 75 percent of American mothers breastfeed their babies, but the issue of nursing in public remains controversial, as it raises the difficult question of how much exposure is too much. Babies get hungry even in public places, so what's a mother to do?

Of course women should breastfeed in public. We might as well ask, "Should babies eat in public?" I can't imagine anyone would answer no to that question, and since breasts, quite simply, are *for* feeding babies, there is only one logical answer.

If women themselves are uncomfortable breastfeeding in public and want to cover their body or relocate, that is certainly their decision to make, but it certainly should not be for anyone else to decide. Breastfeeding is by nature a discreet activity (the baby's head is blocking the breast!) and when it's done in public, despite what people seem to think, it's all about the baby, not onlookers. Public breastfeeders, despite accusations, are rarely exhibitionists. If you don't want to see it -- easy solution -- don't look!

Those who suggest that women should always use blankets or pump and feed a bottle when out (or use formula), or retire to their car or a restroom might as well suggest that those who eat meat should eat it under the table when out so as not to offend vegetarians. There are also health reasons opposing formula and bottles for breastfed babies!? It's ridiculous to assert that moms, who already have enough on their minds, should have to bear *any* inconvenience -- relocating or carrying covers -- simply because some random person they don't know can't handle seeing breasts used for the purpose they are made for.
