Are Generic Drugs as Effective as Name Brands?

Sick and tired of high drug costs? You're not alone. Americans spend more than 150 billion dollars per year on pharmaceuticals, and with costs rising all the time, many are looking to generic alternatives. These products promise the same benefits as their name-brand equivalents, but at a fraction of the cost. When considering something as important as your personal health, do generic drugs measure up?

Binders, Fillers, and Other Chemicals May Be Different

ConsumerLab

The active ingredient in a generic drug must be the same as in the original, BUT other chemicals are permitted to be different. Some people may have sensitivities or allergies to these chemicals. These “inactive ingredients” may also affect the rate of delivery of the active drug (as described below).

Unfortunately, current labeling of generics does not highlight these differences.

It is important that consumers and doctors consider the change to a generic, or from one generic to another, as a potential cause of new symptoms.
