A Fence Will Destroy the Environment and Violate Property Rights.
The Department of Homeland Security
(DHS) exercised its power, granted by Congress and the REAL ID Act, to bypass
34 federal laws to complete 500 miles of fence in Texas ,
New Mexico , Arizona ,
and California .
The list includes laws protecting the environment, endangered species,
farms, deserts, and forests. If the wall is built, the 12-to-15-foot-tall steel fence and its construction will disrupt
the habitat of jaguars, pygmy owls and other sensitive fauna in the wildlife
refuge.
Furthermore, 54% of the land where the fence will be built
is private property. Landowner opposition is so strong the government is
pressing lawsuits against homeowners who refuse to sell their land. DHS is also condemning the land of 100
property owners in the Rio Grande
Valley .
